Question about Kenmore 64802 Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

We have a Kenmore tht is about 6 years old or so. We bought it at an auction. From the beginning, we had to put a dish on the top shelf to catch dripping water. We just put up with that for a long time. Recently, the freezer is nice and cold, but the refrigerator section is warm. My husband is pretty competent at repairs, but has been stumped. He has thawed everything a couple times, but can't get it going. We are reading about a timer and thermostat that can go bad, but having trouble locating them. Are they inside the refrig in the covered unit at the top of the compartment? Help!

Thanks for your reply. After having the refrig unplugged for several days (we have a back up frig!!) I removed the plastic cover containing the thermostat and frig controls - exposing the air passage between the freezer and frig compartment. While the fan in the freezer sounds to be running normally, very little air is blowing into the frig, and the frig temp is not getting cool enough. I've checked out the other things you mentioned, and am not finding an issue.

Several things may contribute to this issue. The defrost timer may be malfunctioning which could cause the freezer to be cold because of ice in it but ice is blocking air flow to the refrigerator section so it gets warm. If the unit is actually trying to defrost as it should then the trough that the water follows leaving the coil may be blocked with fuzz or a wrapper that got in a bad place or just dirt. It may have a small heater in the tube that takes water away that is bad or the tube under the fridg that collects the water for evaporation may be kinked or plugged. The defrost timer is probably under the fridg or in the back under a panel. the thermostat should be near or attached to the adjustment knob.

Most refrigerators that have a fan have a second control knob somewhere that actuates a diverter damper to regulate the amount of air to the fridg. Actually the freezer in a sense runs wild and the refrigerator stat controls that section and the freezer just follows along with what the fridg doesn't need which is enough of course to freeze and maintain around 0-10 degrees F. Check that damper and see if it may be stuck or broken.

Dishes on top rack don't get clean

The following suggestions will greatly enhance the ability of your dishwasher to clean all of the dishes thoroughly:

1. Rinse all of the food off of the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher.

2. Run the hot water into the sink until it is as hot as it gets before you start the dishwasher.

3. Do not pack the dishes into the dishwasher, just put in a reasonable number without crowding or stacking them on either shelf.

4. Pull the top shelf all the way out to be sure that the water connection at the rear of the top shelf is connected. Sometimes, this connector comes disconnected preventing the water from entering the top spray assembly.

THese things should make a huge difference.

Good luck with this and please rate my answer. Thanks. Joe
