Hi i have a empisal 550d overlocker . I have difficulty with cotton breaking after sewing for a few seconds. Can you help please ?

Could be the tension is set too high on that particular thread tensioner.

If it is not the tension, then this is the first thing to try (I know, it's painful but 99% of the time takes care of my issue): Remove all the threads from the machine, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and then rethread from the beginning. Verify that you are threading each in the "proper" order and that the threadpath for each is correct.

If it is a needle thread, replace with a brand new needle. Try a different brand of thread or spool on that particular threadpath. AVOID old or bargain bin thread. Check to make sure that particular thread is not hanging up on a burr, a sharp spot, or looped in the thread tree, etc. that catches the thread and holds it from advancing through the path.

How to thread an empisal over locker ,DE-LUXE400

The manual should be helpful:
Empisal companion deluxe 400 user manual

It is always best to start out with brand new needles.

Before beginning to thread, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot throughout the threading process. This releases the tension disks so the thread will seat properly.

Follow the thread order when threading or your machine will most likely never work properly. Usually, it would be the upper looper first, the lower looper next, and then the needles. However, your manual should clarify that. Also, when threading each, be sure to give each thread an extra little tug when it goes through the tension disk to make sure it seats correctly.

How to thread a Empisal overlocker.. model 760C

Perhaps the manual would help:

Empisal Overlocker 760C Empisal Sewing Machines

On most machines, it is important to ALWAYS raise the presser foot when threading the machine (although the instruction manual says to raise the presser foot only to pull the thread tail under it). Be sure to give the thread an extra little tug when going through the tension disk to seat it properly. Be sure to thread in the order as specified (Upper looper, Lower looper, Right needle, Left Needle). If the machine messes up, it is usually a best policy to remove all the thread and rethread from the beginning. Threading out of order will almost guarantee failure!!!

Poppie, are you still stuck? I have a vintage Empisal and did the same thing - but I finally figured out how to put the tension back together. Check out my blog to see if you have a similar machine and I may be able to help.

Shredding and breaking thread

Connie this has got to be a new machine and it sounds like you have had major problems. I would try throwing a big tantrum in the shop and demanding a replacement machine! However, that doesn't help you right now. Thread shredding and subsequent needle breakage sounds like a thread feeding issue. Is the thread spooling off the reel nicely? Is it staying in the thread guides and tension disks? Is this problem happening with regular sewing or with embroidery or with both? If it is with embroidery, watch the thread as it comes off the reel rather than watch the design sewing out. You can often see what is happening and can stop the machine before disaster strikes. Also check and double check for thread caught in the tension disks - flossing out with a dollar bill is recommended - and check for any shredded thread build-up on the take-up lever. May I suggest that you consider joining the Yahoo group for Designer Diamond machines? The amount of collective knowledge in these groups is just amazing and you will get a lot of support in using your machine to its potential there.
