First thing to do is fit a BRAND NEW needle - ensure it is the correct type AND that it has been fitted facing the correct direction (it could be bent ever so slightly .... not detectable to your eye) Next recheck thread path - use a QUALITY thread (not a cheapie). Esure that the bobbin has been wound on tightly (should not feel spongy when pressed with your nail) and that the bobbin has been inserted correctly into the bobbin case (can go two ways, but the thread will not be feeding correctly unless the bobbin is in the correct way. Still not picking up? .... remove the shuttle hook from the machine and check VERY carefully for ANY slight burring on the hook point, or anywhere along the edges of the hook behind the point. If there are any, they will need to be carefully removed using 400 or finer wet and dry abrasive. None of these solve the issue, then it most likely is timing or the clearance between the needle scarf and the hook - both best done by a technician as part of a routine service :)

Bobbin doesn't move so that needle can pull thread up from bobbin

If the tail is long enough on the bobbin thread and the top thread does not pick it up, try a brand new needle. A bent/damaged needle sometimes will not pick up the bobbin thread. If a new needle doesn't help, then your machine is probably out of time. Search for sewing machine timing or take it for service.

I'm having a problem threading my brother sewing machine model XL 3010

1. Clean up any loose thread in the bobbin area.
2. Pull on the bobbin thread while it is out. It should give a tension that is equal to the top tension of three. You'll have to approximate. Adjust the screw tension on the bobbin. It is the screw nearest to the thread exit hole on the side.
3. Put it back in.
4. Now, the top tension should be at about three. If it still allows a little wad on the bottom of the fabric you can adjust the top tension by tightening a small amount and monitor each time you adjust. The wad should go away.

I have a brother ls-2150 I can't pick cotton up from the bobbin

Try installing a brand new needle (verify it is installed correctly). If it still does not pick up the bobbin thread, the needle/hook may be out of time, requiring service.

The needle is not picking up the lower thread, I have cleaned the machine but the bobbin is not being picked up

Doesn't pick up bobbin thread
1. The bobbin may be in backwards.
2. The bobbin thread & top thread need to be pulled to the back before starting the stitching
3. You need a ballpoint rather than universal needle to sew on t-shirt knits.
4. the needle is in the machine backwards
5. Make sure the needle is the correct one for the fabric being sewed
6. Needle inserted wrong in the needle holder
7. Warped needle
8. Warped bobbin
9. Also could be a timing problem

My Bernette 715 isn't picking up the bobbin thread and is getting jammed. Any ideas what's wrong?

First thing to always try: Install a brand new needle. A dull, worn, or bent needle will cause great frustration. It is also the least expensive resolution to most problems.

Second: Remove all the threads. RAISE the presser foot. Rethread from the beginning making sure it is threaded correctly.
Pull up the bobbin thread before beginning to stitch and hold the thread tails in the left hand while slowly taking the first few stitches:

If still having issues with not pulling up the bobbin thread, the needle/hook may be out of time.

Won't pick up bobbin thread

Did you check the tension? Sometimes when doing lettering or other specialty stitches you would lesson the thread tension which affects the bobbin thread behavior; did you remember to increase it again before switching back to plain sewing? (Though I would still expect it to pick up the bobbin thread... if it's not picking up bobbin thread then I wonder how the loops are being left on the back side of the fabric; it's the tension of the bobbin thread that keeps the top thread from just pulling through. I'm adding this because maybe that's a clue?)

My Sew D'lite machine worked fine the last time I used it a year ago, but now it is not wanting to pick up the bottom thread regularly. It will sew regular stitches for a little while, and then stop...

It is time for cleaning. Open up machine and use a hair dryer to loosen dried grease. Use a qtip to remove dry grease. If done the right way it will take a while to do this. Moving parts that are moving has to be lubricated to lower friction and wear. Use only sewing machine oil. Lubricate the needle arm while it goes up and down and the race with one drop of oil. The race is a little area under the bobbin case that looks like a race track. Replace needle. This area should also be cleaned thoroughly. Set top tension to four. Pull on the thread to feel how much pull it requires to make the thread move. This is the same pull you will need for the bobbin. You may need to adjust the bobbin by turning the screw to get the right tension. It cannot be loose. The attempt is to get the exact same tension as the top tension just like a tug of war. After cleaning you may change your thread. It might be too old to use. Once all of these have been done you can thread the top and use one hand on the hand wheel to bring the bobbin thread up. It should come up easily. Try your machine. Leave the top tension set at four. If the stitches aren't so good make minute adjustments on the bobbin until you have a beautiful stitch. The top tension and bobbin tension must be the same pull. If you have done all this and it still doesn't give you a good stitch you will need to have it timed from your local pro.

The machine stopped sewing, the top thread doesn't pick up the bobbin thread, even when I just installed a new bobbin and try to just run the machine by hand to pick up the bobbin thread.

Have installed your bobbin right? By this, I mean drop the bobbin in but make sure that you pull the thread through the tension spring by putting your finger to hold the bobbin in place, then pull on the thread to get the tension. Let me know if this works.

How to properly thread the bobbin

From the Simplicity Sew Precious Model SWSP2 manual:
Inserting a new bobbin:
  1. Place wound bobbin into the bobbin case.
  2. Pull about 6 inches of thread out from the bobbin. NOTE: Be sure that the bobbin rotates COUNTER-CLOCKWISE when thread is pulled.
  3. Pass the thread from the bobbin, under the bobbin case spring, and toward the back of the machine.
  4. Slide bobbin cover back into position.
