A 2004 Evinrude I believe is actually a Suzuki motor, which as far as outboard motor brands go, is not the most reliable or sustainable. Not trying to put down your motor, but rather saying this could be a super easy fix, or more of a pain. Most likely, you have electrical issues. Start with battery connections, you'd be amazed how many bad grounds have stopped boats dead in the water. Make sure everything is tightly connected, and not overly corroded. Secondly, make sure you have a known good battery, it should be a 24series battery, and not have any bulges or cracks. Next, your motor will have approximately 3 to 5 fuses under the cowling, one will be for trim/tilt, one for the starter, whatever, but one will be the main fuse. Check all fuses, most motors come with spares. Now, if there is good power to the engine, and you can trim it up and down, gauges work, etc, but it wont crank or start, then your neutral safety switch becomes the next culprit. If for some reason the motor is in gear, it will not crank, check at the motor first by disconnecting the shift cable and moving the engine into neutral manually, now try to crank. Past this, it could be a list of issues that have snowballed, including bad main harness, bad key switch, or even a seized motor. If you're able to turn the engine over by hand, then it wont be seized. If you have access to a power probe, or some DC meter, this will all be made easier.

1978 evinrude will tilt up but not down

Sounds like something is wrong with your tilt and trim motor. You can find some replacements below.

I have a 35 HP 1982 I think Evinrude that Will not shut off . Starts fine.

This motor should still be running the 2 magnetos under the flywheel. There should be a wire connected to both sets of points which comes out from under the flywheel looking like a light cord. If you touch these two together, the motor dies. (job of the key switch_) So your key switch is faulty or wired wrong. The two terminals labled (M) should be connected to these.

1964 5 1/2 hp evinrude kills at high speed

You should have a High Speed carb adjust and a Low Speed carb adjust. If it's running fine while idling, adjust the high speed setting. If you have two nobs, its the lower one. May be set wrong. If you don't have two nobs, remove the carburator and check the jets to make sure they are completely clean or better yet, order yourself a carb rebuild kit to take care of all of this. I just rebuilt my 1971 evinrude 4hp and the carb kit made the world of difference.
