Why does my tranny slip after 30 mins of use?

I have the ys4500 I have the whining noise coming from transmission but it's only when the mower has been used for bout 30 mins. If I mow the hill right when I start then I'm fine but if I do flat part then try hill won't climb it. I have to shut mower off for 20-30 mins then after that I can go do the hill....why is that?

The NOT SERVICEABLE UN-TRUTH.

The Huskvarna YTH150 uses Hydrogear transmission 319-0650, drive model 150071. One place to find parts and diagrams for most Huskvarnas is here: http://www.m-and-d.com/Hydro-Gear_parts.html

MTDs use Hydrogear trannys also. Go to the site and enter 618-0319 in the search box. It will bring up a selection of MTD transmissions.

Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid is actually 10W-50 synthetic motor oil (like mobil). Do not use hydraulic fluid or transmission fluid.

Hydro static transmissions on most lawn tractors are very similar. Most of them are made by one or two manufacturers. Tuff Torq makes a lot of them, but not the Huskvarnas. They definitely make all the John Deere lawn tractor hydro drives. The lawn tractor manufacturers (like JD) often say they are sealed and not serviceable. That is flat out, a lie. All of the JD hydros, and most all others, are serviceable. A complete line of rebuild/replacement parts can be found at Tuff Torq. Info and instructions can be found there. They have a lot of good general info for anyone rebuilding their tranny.

Additionally, I have found that the mower manufacturers fill them (or spec them) with motor oil, 10W-30W. In the service manual, and at the hydro manufacturer, you are told if your tractor is used in extreme or heavy duty situations it's best to drain the oil and replace it with 10W-50 synthetic motor oil (like mobil). Truth is the tranny should have this oil from the get go. It will give you more power and extend the life of the tranny. The mower manufacturers are all just being cheap. They figure why not, you're the one who has to pay for the early failure. Oh yeah, one other minor detail, the tranny manufacturer also recommends regular oil changes, like every 100 hours.

Virtually all of these trannys have a black drain plug on the top. You have to remove the tranny from the mower (not a difficult things to do, takes about 30 min). Pull that black plug (I used a flat screwdriver to pry mine out) and turn the tranny upside down for about 30 min to completely drain. Most hold about 2 quarts. Flip it back, right side up, and refill. Install plug and reinstall tranny. Note: under the plug there is often a magnet which collects metal shavings. Lift this magnet out while you have the plug out, clean it and replace it. It may fall out while the tranny is upside down.

When you refill the fluid just keep filling till it comes up within a quarter inch of the plug. You may have to go through a bleed process after reinstalling the tranny. The tuff torq site explains the bleed process.

Try changing the drive belt, they stretch after a while and slip when under load, this heats up the belt and it slips even more. Giving it time to cool down rectifies the slip temporarily.

SOURCE: TRACTOR BLEW WHITE SMOKE, AND STARTS TO SPUTTER

Start with making sure your oil lever is not over full. If it is it may be getting into the crankcase breather hose that goes to the carburetor hence the white smoke. Sometimes also you can blow a gasket in the breather system and it will do the same. Check for oil leaks in the breather system. Hope this helps. donnyb60

Why is my John Deere LA 150 not pulling hills after 40 minutes of mowing

I have an LA145. I do a bit of commercial mowing with this mower. Sounds like tranny problems developing, if the growling noise is coming from the back under your seat. Tranny problems need immediate attention if you want to save the tranny.

Whining noise on 2002 chevy tracker, comes and goes

Could be your alternator or a bad idler pulley. Is the transmission good? It may be the tranny or your differential whining.

Tranmission doesn't shift properly, high rpms and whining noise

The transmission fluid filter is the problem. This service should have been done at 80,000 miles. A dirty filter will cause the charge pump whine and loss of charge pump pressure will cause clutch packs to slip. Do not perform this service yourself, Its messy and not for novices. Do not drive or damage to clutch pack friction plates will occur.

very common husqvarna problem if you read through these postings daily. that mower is actually made by AYP and that is about right price for a new tranny, inability to climb slight grades is the first sign. you can search eBay for folks selling hydrostatic trannies off NOS and there are mower junkyards out there if you google around. the tranny went out in mine after about 6 years and hundreds and hundreds of hours. if it only has a hundred hours you could check the the manufacturer about possible recalls, do that through a google search of the company name. changing the fluid is something i tried before scrapping mine, did not work and was a day of work to remove, drain, reinstall and bleed. I did get over 300 bucks for scrap mower on ebay, folks wanted the engine and the deck.

good luck

The most common whining noise from that tranny is the transmission pump. Sometimes they have a high pitch whine noise yet nothing wrong its normal. Sometimes its an indication of the pump being over-worked due to a dirty filter or fluid low. Turn engine on and check tranny fluid level. If low add to cold mark on dipstick, check for leaks under vehicle. If fluid appears very black or burnt smell, recommend flushing fluid and replacing filter (located inside tranny pan) yours will be a 4L60E type tranny.

Your transmission is going to fail sooner or later, the whining noise you hear is the the clutch packs in the transmission going out.

Harley's do run hot, anywhere from 220 to 240 normally, and a little hotter this time of year. I suggest running a straight weight oil, and a little heavier weight in the summer. I use Valvoline VR-1 30 weight most of the year, and 50 or 60 weight in the hot summer, and I use Lucas 20w50 primary/trans for the primary and tranny. I don't bother with the extremely high prices of the HD oils. For the whining noise, you need to determine which side of the engine it's coming from. Whining will almost always be in the bottom end. There's nothing in the top end that should whine, and if there is whining from the top, it's usually an air leak around the carb. Start by checking the fluid levels in the tranny, and primary. These are the two most common areas to pick up a whining noise. If it's coming from the left, it's going to be in the primary, and usually this is caused by low fluid levels. From the right, it's going to be either the tranny, low fluid, or the oil pump. The oil pump is a gear type system. If you're running a light weight oil, say a 10w40 or HD 20w50, when the engine heats up and the oil thins, it can cause the oil pump gears to whine a bit, especially in the summer heat. So, check the fluid levels, if they check good, then change the oil, since the summer is coming to an end, go with a straight 30 weight. This should clear up the whining noise. If it doesn't, get back to me with the exact location the noise is coming from, and we'll go to the next level of diagnosing the whine, but I believe that this will cure it.
