When you look at a widescreen movie there will always be black at top and bottom of screen. Movies are not in 4:3 format like for TV and they are like you see at the cinema or an a DVD player.
Just hover the mouse pointer at the base of the screen and the pause button will be there. Also set the volume slider.
I have been with Netflix for more than 2 years now, watch movies everyday, never have a problem.

Your screen resolution is incorrect for the resolution of the Netflix stream, try changing the size settings on your TV. (If your TV is not a modern flat screen it will be over scanned )

White screen on my zen

Please, watch this video which explains how to solve the white screen for your mp3 player:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8g0sh7pc54

1. Fully charge the unit.

2. Get a song to play.

3. Lock the device by moving the Hold/Power switch up.

4. Wait for the screen to blank to black, and also wait an ADDITIONAL 25-seconds after the screen blanks.

5. While holding the Play/Pause button down, move the Hold/Power switch out of the lock-mode, and all the way down (like you're turning it off).

6. Release the Play/Pause button.

All I get is a squished picture in the middle 40-50 percent of the screen. The top and bottom parts are black. Also, in using my remote's up/down buttons, all I get are channels 2 to 13. If I press channel...

Are you by any chance using Closed Caption?
The channels that do appear are they full screen?
How about what the picture is on a DVD through the Video inputs.?
Please fill us in on these suggestions.

How do I get the device to play? The device options are: menu(on top near display screen), right & left arrows, play/pause on the bottom, and there is no volume indicator.

Try to check the sideways if there's any volume button.
If there isn't, go to menu and go to settings.
There should be a volume option there.

No volume on my F20

It sounds like you have muted your F20.
If this is the case you need to turn on the Sat Nav (outside so it picks up the Sats). Once the sats have loaded and machine is working. Press the arrow button bottom right, which takes you to map pages, press the screen on an empty area on the map page. This will bring up another on screen menu which gives you another 6 options (these include pausing routes, brightness etc..) one of the options is 'mute' (top right on screen button) press the button once and you should be un-muted.(It is one press to mute and press again to un-mute). Once un-muted, use the side + & - keys to raise and lower volume.
Hope this helps, if you are already un-muted and still have no volume, you may have a faulty unit. You could try a master reset by inserting a pin into the reset hole on the bottom of the unit.

Black bars in the picture

For Models: CC4352, CC4362, CC4393. Your camcorder has a wide format recording mode that lets you make recordings compatible with the 16x9 format. When 16x9 is activated, the camcorder records black bars at the top and bottom of the picture to produce the wide-screen (movie) effect. This is also known as "letterbox" recording. Do not use this mode unless you have a compatible 16x9 TV. When played on a regular TV, black bars appear on the screen. If the 16x9 feature is activated on your camcorder and you want to turn it off, press REC/PAUSE to pause recording, and repeatedly press DIGITAL EFFECTS until no digital effects display appears.
