Question about Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 Film Flatbed Scanner
Scanner makes a grinding noise and the scanning arm doesn't move an error message then appears (code:201) saying to consult the manual. I've looked in the manual but can't find the code it's referencing. I checked the scanner lock on the back to make sure it's unlocked which it is, but it appears to be broken as it's stuck in the open position and can't be moved.
It feels to me like it's a mechanical problem, any ideas anyone?

Check the lock switch and make sure it is unlocked. I think the lock switch is on the bottom...or it may be under the lid near one of the hinges. Flip it back and forth and leave it in the unlocked position.
If this doesn't work, then it will most likely need service. Contact Canon Tech Support.

I had the same problem more than 1 year ago and then found the solution (at least in my case that is) somewhere on the internet. Since I have the same problem with a new computer I searched the internet once more, but did not find the solution. However, last time I was so clever to write down the solution on the disk of my old laptop. The laptop is gone, but not the disk, so I could access it by putting it in an USB enclosure and was able to find the solution once again. Here it is:
c:WINDOWS wain_32CNQLxx (xx is the number of your scanner) should be included in the PATH environmental variable.

Select your operating system and download the driver "TWAIN Driver - LiDE 20 Scanner Driver Ver. 184.108.40.206a_xp" and then download the software "Canoscan toolbox" ...here is the link:

ok, I solved this problem in an unorthodox fashion but it worked... so far that is. First a little history, I was getting this problem constantly and I was at the point where I was going to dump the machine in the trash... therefore I decided to do a little surgery.
Solution: I ripped off the plastic sides of the scanner and lifted the glass from the front while it was still in the back of the machine. I started to try to scan. After doing that I received a different error. After that error I replaced the glass without the plastic sides and it scanned with no problem. It works for me and it has worked since. Unorthodox? Yes it is, but when I forced a different error and forced recognition. I believe this is a software problem and not a hardware. Good luck to the rest of you. Any questions, I'll try to reply.
