Turn off the power using the switch on the back of the printer. Open the front door of the printer. Hold Continue button down, power on the printer, and continue to holding Continue down until the LEDs begin to flash. When the LEDs start to flash, release Continue button. The LEDs will continue flashing until only Error LED will be lit. Close the front door. Continue, Ready/Data, Toner Low and Load Paper LEDs should be lit. Wait till the printer completes the POST process. POST is complete when fan noise and rollers stops. After POST wait for 5 seconds Press Cancel button 4 times slowly until the Toner Low LED is lit. Any time an imaging drum is replaced on a 1700, 1710, or 1720 model dell laser printer, you must reset
the photoconductor count. The following procedure illustrates how this is done:
1. Open the front access cover
2. Press and HOLD the Cancel Button (Red X)
3. When you see the LED's 'Chase' turn the printer off
4. Close the access cover, and turn the printer back on
5. Press the Continue Button (Green Triangle) to print a settings report
6. Under the section 'Cartridge Information', locate the item 'PHOTOCONDUCTOR COUNT=0K' indicating 'Zero Thousands'.
s now been reset, and you should now be able to print now ok

Replaced drum but light continues to blink

To reset the photoconductor drum counter, press and hold the Cancel button on the printer until all lights flash in sequence. You can clear the Replace photoconductor message only when the imaging drum has been replaced. For more information on how to replace the drum, see the User's Guide.:

Even after changing new cartridge my print out has black ink stain on page left and right

This is usually due to a dirty imaging drum roller (green roller below toner). Remove the toner / drum assembly, then separate the two. Now slowly rotate the imaging drum roller by hand using the gear on the side of the cartridge (Try not to not touch the drum roller with your hand, as oils from your skin may cause further problems + toner is nasty) Look for toner splotches to the left and right on the drum roller as you turn it. If you see any you can clean them off with a damp paper towel. Then reassemble the printer and hold the continue button down until you hear the printer start then release it; this will print a test page.. Hopefully that will take care of the issue. Also while you got the assembly out of the printer you can clean the glass print-head lens using a clean, dry, and lint free cloth. The print head lense is located within the recessed area in the top of the printer.

- I have seen that happen to a bunch of those printers and that is usually all it is. Let me know if that takes care of it.

Dell 1720dn has gray streaks in printing

That green drum is the imaging drum, and it needs to be replaced. You can purchase directly from dell:

After-market replacements are available as well from a number of online sellers. A search on Google will provide many links.

Dell 1720dn Error and Toner light on

After replacing the drum unit you have to tell the printer that you've done it(it's not smart enough to figure it out itself). Have the front door open and press and hold the Cancel button on the printer until all lights flash in sequence then let go. Then close door and try.
