Ok with your dishwasher here's the most common things that are most likely stopping it from powering up, check the main power supply box, the latch switch could be bad or the motor ok now......you will need a VOM (volt-ohm meter) to check certain parts. Remember, when checking parts, the power to the dishwasher is always off, unless state otherwise, It's also helpful to keep a notebook nearby to record how things go back together.

ok.... check the power at the source. Make sure the breaker is on. If it is, then check the power at the dishwasher. If it's hardwired, go back and turn the breaker off. You will have to open the dishwasher door, unscrew the screws holding it in place underneath the countertop and shimmy the unit out. The junction box is located at the rear, on the bottom. Open the junction box and check the wires for corrosion, breaks, or loose connections. Check the interior of the box for any burn or "arc" marks. If everything is clear, turn the power back on and check for voltage by probing the black and white wires. If you get no voltage, the breaker may be bad.
If this isn't the problem, then here's a few other things to check:

  • The door latch switch may be bad -- Open the door's access panel and set your VOLTMETER to RX1. With the latch in the "open door" position, probe the two terminals. You should get a reading of infinity. Now close the latch and probe again. The reading should be zero. If not, replace the latch switch.
  • The control timer motor could be bad -- With the control panel off, disconnect the motor leads from the timer. Set the VOLTMETER to RX100 and clip the probes to the lead wires. If you get an infinity reading, or a very high resistance, then the motor is bad.

Have a look underneath dishwasher by removing front bottom access panel, the one touching the floor. Look for a round plastic disc about size of 4 jam lids together, centre front of dishwasher. Inside of it is a foam disc that will float up off the base of the dishwasher if water causes it to do so. This floating up will trip a switch. Clean base of dishwasher of water and maybe test the switch with multimeter. Reset fault by holding down start button.

If the dishwasher's turn dial isn't on off the door will not shut. Try turning the dial to off on the front of the washer.

New installation and dishwasher will not shut off

I will ask and answer some clarification questions rather than send messages back and forth. Lets see if we can get you going in the right direction.

The machine fills constantly with water. It will run even with the dial turned off.

Running and filling are two different operations so I'll make some assumptions.

There is a door interlock switch that tells the unit the door is closed and it is OK to run. That must be working or you would be dead. As is the float valve or it would turn the unit off all together.

I am going to assume from what you say it is the constant filling that is the problem. If that is so then it is the intake solenoid that is jammed in the open position or the timer is stuck in the fill position.

If it is filling with the power on or off then the solenoid is jammed. Test this by shutting off the breaker and turn on the water supply. You can also try leaving the door open. If water enters the unit for sure the solenoid is stuck open. An easy fix, remove the unit, the solenoid is located where the water supply line connects. Turn off the breaker, simply disconnect the water, power, and unscrew the part.

Depending on the unit it is possible although unlikely the the intake water supply and drain lines are reversed.

If with the power off and the water on there is not water flow then the timer is at fault.

Either way if it is a new machine then warranty should cover it.

If not a new machine you can replace these parts easily.

Check my profile and look at Dishwasher 101 tips and tricks. It explains more on how to solve and replace.

Hope this give you some direction. Please rate if so.

Whirlpool ADP951,not operating

My advice, go buy a new one. If money is tight, go to the clearance aisle at Home depot and look for a scratch/dent discount model to replace it.

Old dishwashers were never good from the beginning. No point in fixing it - it was never designed well.

Ok try this, open the door and then hit these buttons in the following combination. HI TEMP - DRY - HI TEMP - DRY...then close door and press cancel...then wait for the pump to shut down. you should be able to run a cycle after this...If this fails to fix the problem give me the make and model # of the dishwasher, this can normally be found just inside the door.
