Can I use 256 mb ram in addition to 512 mb for a P IV system?

I have Pentium IV processor, Intel DG101GGC motherboard and 512mb physical memory.
I want to improve my system speed by adding another RAM of 256 mb.
Someone said that processor gets damaged when I add another RAM in addition to that 512 mb RAM I have.
Is it true for my system configuration?
I don't know in depth details like "frequency" etc of RAMs and both RAMs are of different manufacturers and are DDR1.

Can I safely install both( 512 + 256) of the RAMs?

yes. if you want, you can remove the 512 and boot the system with 256 to be sure it is compatible with the system then add the 512 when you are satisfy the 256 is working.turn off the system when making any of this change.

There should be no problem with this. Modern motherboards are fairly intelligent about different types of memory. The motherboard should take 2GB. Memory is so cheap now (relatively speaking) Crucial's website says that 2GB would cost you £62 and then you would see a real improvement.

Yes. If there is a problem the BIOS will tell you on boot. It won't destroy the motherbvoard or the memory.

I have a mainboard of model D845GVAD2------------------------AAC18931-104. It has already intall the Intel celeron processor of 1.8GHz. Now I want to upgrade my processor. So what high frequency processor...

Hello,
The Intel® Desktop Board D845GVAD2 supports a single Pentium® 4 processor with a system bus frequency of 400 MHz or 533 MHz, or a single Celeron® processor with a system bus frequency of 400 MHz.

So you can install upto 3.06 GHz 533 MHz(cache memory) processor and also update the ram 2 GB 400 mhz.
Dont install Prescott processor.
Hope it will help you.

No, u can't. ur motherboard is designed for pentium III processors with FSB -133 MHz, Socket-370 type. Pentium 4 processors have 400 MHz FSB, 423 Socket at least. But yes for memory, u can upgrade it to 512 MB.

851 MHz Celeron Processor

*********** board will support a max of 1GB of RAM. Your processor is an Intel at 1.8 GHz. The preceding is only true if your PC is the Emachines T1840 as you chose in the category listing of your post. Again if that is true, you can achieve the max RAM by installing a 512MB stick in each of the two memory slots.
Good luck.

PS: Gdlkn84as528 is correct in assuming that a less than 1.3GHz Intel processor would be a P3 or equivalent processor. So which is it, it can't be both ways?

I have 256 MB RAM which is slow, can i upgrade it to 512 MB RAM

Depends completely on what motherboard the computer has and what it supports, I could check on it if you have and brand and model of the computer, or from the motherboard.

Sure the prosessor speed doesn't affect the memory amount possible don't worry about that, just need to find out how much is supported and at what speed etc.

Thanks,
Ekse

RAM cuantity

The motherboard you mentioned supports DDR1 RAM.

For windows xp and general application 512 MB is enough.
But if you use memory intensive applications like image/video editing then you can opt for 1-2 GB RAM.

When i add a memory in damaged DIMM slot showing black screen?

Try moving the working DIMM to other slots, it should work in any slot, if it does, the other ram u have is incompatible or bad

Install a matched pair of DIMMs (equal in speed: DDR266, DDR333, or
DDR400; density: 64 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, or 1 GB; and
technology: 128 Mb, 256 Mb, or 512 Mb) in DIMM 0 in both Channels A and
B. If additional memory is to be used, install another matched pair of DIMMs
in DIMM 1 in both Channels A and B.

U have to find the motherbord's manual !!!! U will find there all u need. But most probably u won;t be able to put those processors (the speed diferences are too big, even if they are of the same slot type)
