Question about Computers & Internet

Why does my ethernet not work properly?

I built this computer myself, not my first build, but I am not extremely experienced. After installing Windows 7 and 8 all seemed well, drivers were found and installed. Device manager claimed all was working properly. The problem is that there are two icons in the task bar erroneously claiming that a network cable is unplugged (both LAN ports have tested and working cables inserted). I Google-ed the problem and found a post elsewhere that indicated that completely disconnecting from the power, removing the CMOS battery and letting the computer sit for 30 minutes would solve the problem. I followed these instructions, when the computer booted up a page came up to explain a checksum error and the default settings in the BIOS were loaded. Once the o/s got going the connection was fine. When I shut down and reboot the unplugged network cable icons returns and no network access. If I follow the earlier stated procedure the LAN connection works. I have tried to enter the bios and return the setting to factory defaults, skipping the power/battery procedure and the network connection still fails. Could someone explain what is causing this problem and tell me what to do to prevent it from recurring. Thank you.

Hi Kevin, I want to help you with your problem, but I need more information from you. What is the type of your motherboard?
Generally, this behaviour is little bit strange. If the motherboard is a new one, try to consult the problem with the vendor. Are all the motherboard settings according to the guide? (e.g forgotten jumper for BIOS resetting, etc.). It is difficult to answer without knowlegde of type of motherboard...

My apologies for not getting back to this quicker, work has taken up all my time in the last few months.

The motherboard is an Asus M2N-SLI-Deluxe. I was thinking that there was some fault with the bios, so I did a flash and updated to the latest version. The problem still persists. Could it be a hardware problem? Something holding a residual charge when it shouldn't be? Thank you for any help you may be able to offer.

In order to decide wheather it is a HW or a SW fault, try to boot another operating system, eg. some one-CD Linux testing distribution. In case it is a SW problem:
- try to instal Asus update (utilities):
ASUS Update V7.17.17 for Windows XP 32bit/XP 64bit/Vista 32bit/Vista 64bit/7 32bit/7 64bit from:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2NSLI_Deluxe/HelpDesk_Download/
- try to set in BIOS: POST Check LAN Cable: ENABLE (for both LANs). Any error message?
- try to switch off one of LANs: Onboard 1st(2nd) nVidia LAN: DISABLED. Does the other LAN work?
The last step could be testing different version of BIOS...
The easiest way to get LAN ready could be installing PCI LAN card...

SOURCE: BIOS

have you tried a bios reset instead?try a full reset by getting out the battery and by switching the jumper (all this disconected from the power)-do this with the ramm dims out of the slots also.sometimes this use.
try also to replace the battery and after that rewrite the bos by doing this from a bootable cd under dos mode.DO NOT use the aplication to flash or to update the bios under windows.
this might damage the bios.
check also the integrity of the bios hard component on your mainboard(look for scraches, signes of colizion)
check the bios data..you may have something wrong set
good luck
inform me of your doing..bye

SOURCE: Bios failure, or what?

Hi there.
Try clearing the cmos
d015d7b.jpg<<<<< you will see in the picture a plastic jumper (in this case coloured green), move it to the other position and hit the on/off button, then put it back in its original position and power up the machine again. Hopefully the issue will have been sorted. If there is no jumper remove the battery for an hour and make sure the power cord is removed from the back before you clear the cmos

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

My dell inspiron 1545 cannot connect to internet as it says i have no network adapters installed. How do i do this

Hi Anon
Your laptop should come with an Ethernet connection as well as wireless connections, try making a wired connection via your Ethernet port, these are usually more reliable than wireless connections.
When I have experienced these sort of problems it is usually because of a missing driver.
Check that you have the proper drivers for your internet connections installed, these should come on a disk that is supplied with your laptop.
Finally check this link for Microsoft's official network trouble shooter.

disable the motherboards built-in ethernet adapter in BIOS and get an add-on ethernet card. it sounds like your ethernet card is damaged and its affecting the rest of the computer.

PC says no ethernet card (NIC) after reinstalled

First make sure the card (if a stand alone card ) is properly set in place (you'll have to open the computer and manually test it . Do this with the computer off!). If this is not the case or, you have the card built into the motherboard, you should re-install the drivers from your original installation CD. Otherwise you may need a friend or, atrip to a library/colleg etc, to download the proper drivers.

I reinstalled Windows XP to my computer and now i cant get the internet. There is a yellow question mark and exlmation point next to Ethernet Controller and it has a code 28 error.

You should have had 2 cds that came with your computer. The 2nd one has all the drivers on it. Install the drivers and your problem will go away.

Network Connections are Gone!

I would check in device manager (control panel) and see if the network card is listed. It probably has a yellow exclamation point next to it.
If there is an exclamation point there, then right click the card and click uninstall.
Next, using your wifi to access the internet, download the latest network card driver from the PC vendor website / Motherboard vendor site / discrete network card site.
Install the network card driver and you should be back in business.

Asus P5k ethernet slot on motherboard just stopp ed working

Try tis...
1) Re-installing windows will not fix the problem. Try re-installing the
Ethernet driver (LAN). This driver should be on ASUS install cd.

2) Sometimes ethernet will just stop working. Then you should just
purchase a new ethernet card. They are rather cheap. Check out
Newegg website. You may have to disable onboard Lan in Bios.

The onboard ethernet card just stopped working. There is no fix I can find. I reinstalled windows and the drivers. once you instal the driver it only will start in safe mode.

Reboot your PC and hit F10 or F2 or any key it shows on your screen and go into BIOS setup and there should have one entry you can disable the onboard ethernet card.

Ethernet Drivers for Compaq Evo for XP

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=998

This should work.

And just to add that your system specs are really old and you should think about upgrading. 128 mb ram upgradable to 2 gigs.

Integrated 4x agp graphics...you should be able to install a new agp graphics card.

Or you should buy a new computer if you dont know how to build your own which can be tricky and expensive if you cant reuse many parts.
