Got spots on my lower back

If you haven\'t had chicken pox as a child then adults certainly can contract it. The greater risk in adults is though is that the virus responsible for chicken pox can also cause shingles. This is a much more serious illness.

Measles is also possible to contract as an adult.

Did you have the MMR vaccine? If so, then it is unlikely that you have contracted either measles or chicken pox.

Symptoms of measles generally appear within 14 days of exposure to the virus. Symptoms include:

People with chickenpox have the following symptoms before the rash appears:

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Stomach ache

The chickenpox rash occurs about 10 to 21 days after coming into contact with someone who had the disease. The average patient develops 250 to 500 small, itchy, fluid-filled blisters over red spots on the skin.

Why did they start the vaccinating for chicken pox?

A varicella vaccine developed in Japan in the 1970's was licensed for routine use in Japan and Korea in 1988. The varicella vaccine was recommended for routine use in the United States in 1995. In 2005 a combination measles, mumps, rubella, varicella vaccine (MMRV) was licensed.

Vaccines are routinely developed as a way to confer immunity against viruses for which there are very few drug cures available (unlike bacterial infections).

The vaccine is what you receive when you get a vaccination. A tiny dose of a synthetic analogue (a piece) of the virus is injected into your arm (or bottom). Your immune system responds to this like it is an actual infection and develops antibodies against it. The antibodies protect you from getting a real infection - usually for life. Some vaccines contain viral particles that have been killed (with heat usually). The pieces of virus that enter your body through the injection also bring about an immune response as if you had a real infection. Neither the pieces, nor the killed viruses can cause infection.

The latest chicken pox vaccines need to be boosted later on as adults since the protection wanes over the years. It's an excellent idea to get the booster, since the virus that causes chicken pox is responsible for shingles in older people - a painful condition that affects the nerves. The vaccine will prime your body to fight off chicken pox infections when you are exposed.

Rash with small blisters in a line trailing under right shoulder blade from back to center of chest

It is very possible that you have Shingles. The virus that causes shingles produces a painful, burning line of blisters that follow a nerve in the body. Shingles is basically the adult version of chicken pox. If you have ever had chicken pox then your body contains the virus that causes shingles. There is treatment for this as well as a vaccination; however, you will need to see your doctor to receive the treatment.
