Black section in scans

Hi. Just today we have had a problem where the scanner leaves a large black section in the scanned image.

The first inch or so of a page is scanned, then the next 2 inches are black, after which the scan is OK.

I tried reloading the software and drivers but this did not help, other than the black section sometimes has thin bands of colour in it.

On Epson Artisan 800 the scanner leaves wide black stripes for the whole length of the paper. Printing From a file is OK.

If computer printing is fine (source) but scanner printing has problems, then of course, your problem is in the scanner. The only solution based on your info (which is good), are the lines in the same areas on other bad scanning prints? If so, your problem means that the scan-head has a connection problem leaving a 'black' send to the print buffer. This will require some technical repair replace or clean connection. Remember that this is a mechanical movement that not only records what it 'sees'e but at what X-Y location the read was 'seen'. It would be worth it to get an estimate from your local computer repair center give you an estimate.

When trying to copy or scan on my HP Photosmart C4400 printer I recieve a large black line down the document. This only happends when using the scanner.

THERE IS A DUST PARTICLE LODGED ON THE PIECE OF GLASS ON THE SURFACE SCANNING SECTION OF YOUR SCANNER. The scanner section has a long 8 1/2 inch or longer piece of glass that is about 3/4 of an inch wide. Clean the piece of dust or whatever off of it and the line will go away.
I normally use a cotton swab with alcohol on it and get it off .
Good Idea is to clean the whole piece of glass off from time to time.
I hope this has been a help to you.
Best Regards,

I am trying to scan a document and it is not working, I have a hp photosmart c4280 printer. How do I install a usb cord

Place the document or image into the scanner for scanning. A scanner with a paper feeder will only receive flat papers and photographs, but a flatbed scanner opens to accommodate books, fabrics and leaves along with flat papers. There is even a attachment for feeding photo slides into flatbed scanners.
  • Step 2 Start the scanning softwaremag-glass_10x10.gif. If the scanner does not engage the software automatically, press the "start" or "scan" button, or click the scanner icon on the computer screen to initialize the software.
  • Step 3 Activate the scan. Click the "file" menu and select "acquire," "import," or another practical choice that applies.
  • Step 4 Preview the item to be scanned. Most scanners have a preview option. This will show the scan area inside dotted lines. The lines can be moved with the mouse to relocate, enlarge or crop the scanning area.
  • Step 5 Set the resolution for images by number of dots per inch (dpi). For computer screen viewing, 100 dpi should suffice. Use 200 to 300 dpi for items to be printed.
  • Step 6 Use the appropriate setting for scanning black and white text. If the scanner does not show a preset for text, use "line art" or "black and white" at 300 dpi. Then use the optical character recognition (OCR) program to convert the image of the text into a file for word processi

    Dual sided scanning - how?

From the scan section, chose your recipient(s) first.
Then go to Image Settings > Auto/Original >
Choose 2-sided booklet or tablet, choose portrait or landscape orientation. Then scan as usual.

I believe you can also make this a default under System
Settings > [Admin Login] > Image Send Settings

Copies and faxes come out with 5 inch black area over whole page

Does this same thing happen if you just print a report out of it?

    Here's the logic behind this.

If it happens on scanning or copying, but not on printing that's a problem with the scanning section.

If it happens on everything (scanning, printing etc) that's a problem with in the printer controls.

Usually on lasers, if it's printing related, the first thing to do is change the toner.
If the imaging drum (which is part of the toner cartridge) is damaged, it will leave lines down the page.
This is a fairly common problem on refilled toners.

If you have changed the toner, and it still does it, it's a different problem.

Scanning document leaves streak down right hand side

Even a single grain of dust or a single strand of hair on the scanning glass will cause the scan head to perceive ink/image where there is none. Deffinetly try cleaning the glass using a good window cleaner, and a cloth that is completely clean, or even a peice of newspaper. If the black line remains, I would suggest taking it into a service center to have the scan head itself cleaned.
