What's the purpose of the tub displacement sensor

To detect excessive wash tub movement and shut down the wash cycle. Here is a copy of my post from a real DIY forum;

Google this Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW 5 post down.

Here ya go.....in this post I discuss the issue related to unbalance error codes DC and UC;

Your FAV6800A or FAV9800A is going off balance with DC or UC unbalance error codes during spin cycle and you see/hear the wash tub banging around at the start of Spin Cycle of the wash cycle or a Spin Only cycle. If this is the condition the TDS (Tub Displacement Sensor) is working as designed and signaling the Control Board properly of an unbalance wash load condition.

The Control Board receives a varying D.C . Voltage from the TDS sensor and if the out of range D.C. Voltage limit continues the Control Board will halt the Spin Cycle and try to redistribute the wash load. If you are interested I will show you how to monitor the TDS input to the Control Board with a DVM.

The Control Board then starts the Spin Cycle again. If the wash tub/basket out of balance condition continues the Control Board will attempt another redistribute of the wash load. After several attempts (4 to 5 I believe) the Control Board will shut down the Spin Cycle and send a error code DC or UC to the LED display of the FAV6800A, my machine type. And I believe a text statement to the LCD screen of the FAV9800A machine i.e. something like "Unbalance Condition" I'm not sure what the text message is.

If you need help open a post in that repair forum and I will try help you through your issue.
The forum is free and my time is free I just don

Stops will not spin had censor replace still will not spin.

Is the wash tub banging around in Spin Cycle with a wash load then failing with a dC or UC unballance error code?

If so the TDS is working as designed. Try a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket. If it completes then the issue is most likely a clutch malfunction of your FAV6800A or FAV9800A machine. See this post Clutch Fix

Did you replace the TDS sensor or did a repair person? If it was a repair person did they try a Wet Load Spin Cycle after the TDS replacement?

If a repair person was called and the TDS replaced what troubleshooting steps did they take to warrant changing out the TDS? I would ask if the range of montion check of the TDS was checked for properation signaling action to the Control Board in Service Mode.

Model# FAV6800AWW Serial#16470128GL I have the neptune top loader. I gets down to 8 minutes, then goes back up to 11 minutes, won't complete the cycle, but gives the UC code. I have replaced the struts...

Thank you for Model Number and S/N the first two digits are your Serial Number is your Series number.
Yea that left side bleach dispenser is hard on the TDS the Left Hand Lid Lock also.
Is the washer banging around with the uC unbalance error?
If so see my Clutch Fix post I feel you have a possible issue with slipping One-Way Roller Clutches bearing in the Clutch Pulley.
With that much corrosion I’m concerned about the TDS 3 pin plug. But lets try the TDS check first because of the severe strut corrosion.
It’s in the Service Manual but I’ll type it out. Let’s make sure the TDS is signaling the Control Board correctly with this thru the lid test.
Tub Displacement Sensor Diagnostics check.
It is possible the Tub Displacement Sensor may have failed try this check which is in the Troubleshooting guide stored in your washer console or refer to the SM.

a. Enter the Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

b. Press the Super Wash key display reads “in”…something like that.

c. Press Delicates the Display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

d. Push tub to the back right corner of the machine the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

e. Press Hand Wash.

f. Pull tub to the front left corner while pushing the tub down the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

If you get these results then I feel your TDS is working as designed and signaling the Control Board correctly. What are your results?

I feel it is now time to remove the Clutch Pulley. Follow my post including the test to insure the One-Way Roller Clutches bearings are locking up solid in the CCW direction the Spin Cycle direction.
I hope you can extend the service life of your machine with clutch maintenance.

I have a Neptune TL FAV6800AW Washer that makes a tremendous grinding sound during the wash cycle. Not nearly as loud during the rinse cycle. Also, during the last 13 minutes, the off balance code (DC)...

Hello mjloomis, See this post for my Clutch Maintenance/Repair DIY step by step process. I always suggest the TDS check before you drop the clutch out. The grinding noise may be coins or some other debris under the tumblers. The tumblers can be removed just follow the Service Manual for the FAV6800A/FAV9800A. The SM fails to mention the Torx driver size to remove the tumblers it is a #20 Torx bit/driver. I would start there, then the TDS check almost all the time the dC/uC unbalance errors are caused by the One-Way Roller clutches slipping in spin cycle causing the tumbler movement during wash basket spin up which causes the dC/uC error to shut down your machine?..that also tells me the TDS is OK other wise your machine would shake itself apart. Still recommend the TDS check good practice getting to Service Mode. I recommend a replacement clutch thai I use in my machines. You may get away for a while with a clutch clean up. When I get home this evening I have some additional info regarding testing the One-Way roller clutches for slippage. Tub Displacement Sensor Diagnostics check. It is possible the Tub Displacement Sensor may have failed try this check which is in the Troubleshooting guide stored in your washer console or refer to the SM. a. Enter the Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads ?00? b. Press the Super Wash key display reads ?in??something like that. c. Press Delicates the Display will show ?UC? (Unbalance Closed). d. Push tub to the back right corner of the machine the display should change to ?UO? (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show ?UC? (Unbalance Closed). e. Press Hand Wash. f. Pull tub to the front left corner while pushing the tub down the display should change to ?UO? (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show ?UC? (Unbalance Closed). You can power down the machine and remove the 3 #15 torx sheet metal screws from the back of the console and pull the Troubleshooting guide out if a Friendly Maytag Repair man has not removed. It has the wiring schematic which is handy. I have PDF schematics if you need. You can drain the excess water out of the wash tub in Service Mode; Process slightly modified from the SM; Enter Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads ?00? Pressing the Delicates key will lock the lid. Now press the Presoak key the drain pump will turn on. Stop with off button or hit the Presoak key. Post back if you have questions, I help you thru the DIY fix if you want to save some $$$....Rich

Maytag FAV6800AW won't spin. COuld this be the

Hello leaweber,

Yes most times it is a Clutch malfunction . Is the machine failing with “dc” and or “UC” unbalance error codes in spin cycle? If you are you may have a Clutch malfunction or Tub Displacement Sensor failure more likely a Clutch issue.

You can do a quick TDS sensor check thru the lid just follow this from the Service Manual. If you machine will pass the TDS check the next step would be to remove the clutch from the machine and inspect as I describe in this post.

Tub Displacement Sensor check from the SM slightly modified;

Tub Displacement Sensor Diagnostics check. This test is done with the washer lid raised see page 19 for the details.

If you get these results your TDS sensor should be just fine. Time to look at a clutch repair/replacement. Let me know if you need help…. Rich aka dh1200s

Was washing ok until the last spin then it stop and uc lights are blinking what is uc?its does'tspinat all now

The "uc"code on the Neptune indicates a "continuous unbalanced circuit". Check to make sure that the weight of the clothing is distributed evenly in the tub. There can be a few causes for the generation of this code and you might want to consult an appliance technician for assistance. Bad shocks can cause this by permitting the tub to be out of balance, but you didn't describe any banging, etc. The tub displacement sensor could be at fault. The pump and pressure switch should also be checked for proper operation and to make sure there is no obstructions in those components. Really sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.

The likely hood of finding jet trim for a tub made that long ago is very remote. If you can email us pictures of what you have perhaps we can match them up for you. send photos to: sales@uspartscenter.com
