Whilpool duet tumblefresh 4.4. When starting it, it just lights the 'add garment' led & does nothing else. Please - How do I run diagnostics?

Hi. I have a whirlpool duet tumblefresh 4.4. When starting it, it just lights the 'add garment' led & does nothing else. No water, no spin. Keeps the door locked too. Had to manually unlock it.

This symptom characterizes a problem with a faulty motor control unit (MCU). It has been found that a fault in the MCU can lead to erratic operation of the machine with or without error codes being flashed. It can be verified by isolating the MCU, that is disconnecting it from the central control unit (CCU). If the machine seems to work fine with the MCU disconnected except motor powered functions, the MCU is indeed the problem and the only viable solution is replacing it.

Unplug the machine or disconnect power then remove the three screws from the rear of the machine top cover. Pull back on the cover and release the tabs in the console from the slots in the cover then lift the cover off the unit.

Locate the CCU then disconnect the MCU harnesses marked MS2 and MI3.

Reconnect power then start the machine. Replace the MCU if the machine seems to work fine except motor powered functions. Otherwise, let us know for further advice.

Replaced CCU, Sears washer still will not run
Suggestion: Unplug washer from mains. Open up the machine, disconnect and refit all connectors with wires one by one. Could be some loose connection somewhere. Also helps in the long run

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
Whirlpool F21 (and 16, 18, 20 and 22) states 'control unit failure'. Could be poor connections but requires a service call, sorry ;-0(

Machine was working fine but I stopped it twice to add new garments now the add a garment and wash light are on but when I try to start it nothing happens
its a washing machine built be a man so its none to smart you have confused it to much by asking it twice to do the same job,,,,,,try turning it off then give it time to forget the last job you give it to do, turn it back on and tell it to rince and spin,, that may help it get its drain back in the box?

Just have a question...The feature "Add a garment" - does this mean I have to add a garment because the setting I am using needs more load or does it simply means adding a garment is fine anytime while...
There is no minimum load requirement - it just means you can add a garment or garments if you wish.

Can't get washer to start again after pushing pause/cancel button
sounds like central control unit problem, you can check for diagnostic mode operation by setting (door closed) drain/spin, no spin, pressing prewash 4 times in 5 secs pressing prewash again will advance through diagnostic cycle. replacing user interface may also be necessary

The only button that will respond is
with controls unlocked, you can not power on or start? ck to see if you can get to diagnostic mode.
old duet(red leds) -select drain/spin cycle, no spin (modifier), press prewash 4 times in 5 secs. all lights come on then displays codes, f code are faults
new duet/sports(green leds) - press and hold any one modifier button 4 sec on 4 sec off 4 times.
control boards are common on whirlpool.

Control lock light will not go off.
Do you have any error codes?

Does water remain in the washer after the final spin?
If water remains in the washer after the final spin, then the door will not unlock. Drain/Spin or Spin Only to remove any remaining water from the washer. The door should unlock at the end of the cycle.
Is the door locked and the Add A Garment light on?
If the Add A Garment light is on, then the washer door will unlock after the Pause/Cancel button is pressed once. Pressing the Start button will restart the washer at the same point where it left off in the cycle.
Is the door locked and the Add A Garment light off?
If the Add A Garment light is off, then the washer door will unlock after the Pause/Cancel button is pressed twice. The door will not immediately unlock while the cycle is running due to a possible high-water level in the washer, high-water temperature, tumbling or spinning. It may take up to five minutes for the washer to stop spinning and draining before the door will unlock. You will hear the door click when it unlocks.
If Pause/Cancel does not work:
  1. Unplug washer or disconnect power for one minute.
  2. Plug in washer or reconnect power.
  3. Re-select the cycle and press Start.
NOTE: If the error remains on the display, call for service.
