Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive
Two people above are retarded. It's a well known issue that M$ is too lazy to fix. Technically , closing programs that are using files/folders on the usb should work, but 99% of the time it doesnt work. Your best bet is to shut down windows, then unplug the usb device .

SOURCE: SimpleDrive disconnect
This is caused by the drive letter assignments done by XP and 2003 server. To stop the drive you will need to access Computer Management, Drive Management and locate the drive assignments for the partitions on the drive. Remove the drive letter assignments (has not caused any data issues in my usage). After the drive letters have been removed you can stop. After several calls with SimpleTech they finally said to just unplug without stopping if the drive will be used on the same machine again. If you are moving to another machine the only issue with not removing the drive letter assignments is that the current assignments may conflict with assignments for CD's or other drives on the new machine.

If you tried to stop your external hard drive with it open in Windows Explorer, You will get this message. You cannot disconnect the drive in this condition. Even if you close Windows Explorer after, Windows still thinks it is open. The best thing to do, is restart Windows and when the screen goes black, shut the power off to the external drive or disconnect the USB cable. Disconnecting in any other way causes Windows to have problems with USB devices in the future.
