This happened to me too! Make sure your buttonholer isn't pulled down and locked in to where it's making the machine sew backward. That's what happened to me.

SOURCE: Top & bobbin thread will not sew

Most likely the needle is in backwards. Weird I know, I have no idea why but if the needle is in wrong, it either hits the bobbin and breaks or won't grab the thread at all. Good luck.

SOURCE: Thread tension for Brother XL 2230.

If you have pattern dials set correctly then I might guess that one or more sets may have been missed when the thread was being set up in the machine. most of these models show either arrows or numbers for each or way the thread needs to be routed.

Auto threader won't thread needle

Damaged needle is the most common cause of this, followed by a needle too small for the threader (see: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/17206792 for a size comparison) or a needle not in the correct position for threading, or the threading getting knocked out of alignment.

Personally, and maybe because I've been sewing for 55 years now, but I find most needle threaders seem to be the first thing to break on modern home sewing machines. If you want to thread by hand, simply cut the end of the thread at an angle with a *sharp* pair of scissors. It should poke through the hole easily. Because needle size and thread size really go hand in hand in making good stitches, a thread that is too fat for the needle's eye a) won't go through the eye easily and b) will make your machine stitch like it's suddenly had all the tensions go wonky. (Thread diameter should be about half the width of the eye of the needle; ordinary sewing thread generally works from size 10/70 through 14/90 needles just fine, and occasionally to 16/100.)

What size needles fit a Rex 26-188 walking foot machine?

16x63 needle system, unless it's been retimed for something else. Suggest you might want to find the dull, bent up or otherwise still intact needle and show it to your industrial supplier or repair person, so they can check for you.
Needle system tells you about the length and timing distance of the needle: see, e.g.: http://designer-entrepreneurs.com/blog/illustrations/Singer_Needle.pdf Size tells you about the diameter of the needle: here's a suite of home sewing machine needles, all of the same needle system, but one of the photos shows a comparison of sizes:

Want to know what is the thickest size needle and thread I can use in a Brother XL3022 machine. I am trying to sew some velcro straps

Do not use a needle bigger than a size 16 otherwise a thicker needle will hit the raceway, use a good mercerized threads no thicker than 40

I can not thread a bobbin to save my life. Help.

first, google your sewing machines name and model number and "manual" or "users guide" and you can find the link to the PDF download. Here is what I found:

1 Raise the needle to its highest position by turning the balance whell toward you (counterclockwise) and raise the presserfoot lever. Slide the button and open cover.
2 insert the bobbin so the thread comes out in a clockwise direction. Use bobbins intended for this machine. !CAUTION! Be sure the bobbin is set so the thread unrols in the correct direction. If the thread unrolls in the wrong direction, it may cause the thread tension to be incorrect or the needle to break.
3 Hold the thread end, push the bobbin down with your finger, and pass the thread securely through the thread cutting groove.
4 Replce the bobbin cover. Place the left tab in place then press lightly on the right side until the cover clicks into place. *insert the cover so that the end of the thread comes out from the back of the cover.

good luck and G.Bless!

My xl-5700 the needle keeps breaking or the thread keeps getting all bunched up plus I lost my instruction manual can I gat a new one

About the needle problem, Brother's FAQ gives the following response:

Make sure the needle is correctly inserted with the flat side facing the back and pushed up into the machine as far as possible.

The needle could have been damaged or bent. If so replace with a new one.

Make sure the fabric is not pulled excessively when sewing. Let the feed dogs move the fabric. Do not pull the fabric.

The combination of needle size, thread size and fabric is incorrect.
Be sure to use the correct needle and thread size for the fabric you are sewing.(example: Denim-size 16 needle and 40-50 heavy duty thread).

As for the manual, here's the link:
