I have a pattern for a knitted shell bunting for a baby. The pattern does not state stitches for foundation row. It just says multiples of 9stitches plus3. It's for an infant to six months.

Check tension/gauge guide and see how many stitches to the inch etc on what size needles, then figure out the size of the baby and take it from there. make sure however many stitches you use, that it is in multiples of 9 plus 3.
for example. 27 sts, add 3 . or 36 add 3 =39 and so on. Hope this helps.

How should the first stich in each row be knitted. I.e opposite of what the pattern calls for or pulled off Thank you.

The first stitch of the row is usually the chain that you ended in the last row. The chain essentially builds the height of the pattern to the next row so the stitches are even height from beginning to end. After you have made the chain, then begin with the first stitch in the next row pattern.

So, if the pattern says to knit 3 (or purl 3), that 3 stitches allows the height for the next row.

Hand knitting. the front sections of a jacket mentions to OMIT a stitch at the end of every row - what does that mean? decrease? or Slip1 knit1 and pull slipstitch over?

If it says "omit," then I'm guessing it means to not do anything in the last stitch of the row. However, you may also be able to just knit two together or use the slip stitch. It will probably affect the appearance of the edge, but you may just have to experiment on a test to see which looks best for your pattern.

How do I add knit band to pajama pant on McCalls pattern 7975. I have lost the directions.

Usually the cuff ribbing is cut double the required length plus doubled seam allowances (ie 3" x 2 = 6; add two 5/8" for seams = 1.25"'; equals 7.25" long). It is doubled so when it is folded in half and stitched to the leg, there will be no seams showing outside). The width of the ribbing is probably an inch or so shorter than the leg bottom--it should be large enough for the foot to fit through but tight enough that it hugs (not squeezes) the leg.

Sew the cuff together lengthwise to make a circle. Fold it in half with the stitched seam inside. Then fold the circle widthwise with the seamline at one end. Mark the halfway point opposite the seamline. Then fold in half again with the seamline and the first pin matching together. Mark the other two ends. You've divided it into equal fourths. Repeat the same procedure marking the pajama leg in fourths. Then match the seamline of the ribbing to the seamline of the leg (right sides together). Match the other three marks on the cuff to the three marks on the pajama leg bottom. You'll have the stretch the ribbing because it should be a bit smaller in circumference than the leg bottom. Stretch the ribbing to match the leg bottom and stitch the ribbing and leg bottoms together. Turn right side out.

How do I cast off in knitting?

Take a needle several sizes larger than the ones you have used for the knitting - so the loops will be larger and the edge looser, knit the first two stitches onto the larger needle then use the tip of the other needle to lift the first stitch over the second one and right off the needle, so it is looped over the second stitch, but is no longer on the needle.
Knit another stitch and repeat the lifting over. I f you are casting off all the stitches continue to the end of the row and then cut the yarn, pass the end of the yarn through the last stitch and draw it up.
If you are only casting off part of the row then move the last stitch onto the right size needle and continue knitting on the stitches left in the row.

How do I make a large buttonhole ..( 1 3/8 inch).. the button doesnt fit on the buttonholer.

You do it using narrow rows of side by side zig zag stitches and bar tacking the ends of the rows. Make a line where you want the hole to be. Set the zig zag stitch width very narrow, whatever is closest to what suits the fabric. Coarse or loose weaves need a wider width, finer ones a narrower width. Experiment on some scraps to get it right. Number of stitches per inch, or stitch length, should be very fine, at least 20 per inch, but not 0. Try a few more experiments on scraps to make sure it looks right. Make a test hole to be sure it is the right size for your buttons.

Stitch a straight line of zig zags down one side of your line, with the edge of the stitching not quite touching your line. Stitch a second row directly on top of the first one.

Repeat on the other side of the line. Ideally you should still be able to just see the line you drew when the rows are done, but not see any bare fabric on either side of the line.

Then move to one end of your rows. Leave the stitch length the same, but change the width to match the width of your two side by side rows. Stitch a bar tack, about the same length as your two rows are wide. If your two rows are 1/8 inch wide, your bar tack should be 1/8 inch long. Do the same at the other end. Make sure the bar tack covers the very end stitches in the rows as it is the anchor that will prevent unravelling. This is exactly what machine buttonhole makers do, but they do it all for you.
Carefully slit between the rows to open the hole. I like to put a drop of Fray Check or something similar on my buttonholes after I cut them open. It makes them much stronger and they will never come out.

Can someone tell me which stitch to use on the Bernette 65 to sew elastic? I can't seem to find a stretch stitch. Thanks.

Are you sewing through elastic such as joining the two ends of a loop of elastic in a waistband?

If so, just your straight stitch or three step zig zag works fine.

If you are actually seaming on knit fabrics then you need a stitch with forwards and backwards movement to allow the fabric to give when worn without breaking the thread in the seam. tally_girl_8.jpg If this is your machine and you want to stich jersey or knits, I'd use the overcasting stitch, fifth from the right. or the tricot stitch to the right of it, this stitch is good for attaching rib trim around necks and sleeves.

Your sewing machine manual should also give you information on which stitch is used for what. I also like the Singer Sewing Manual book for good general sewing information.
