Check your power supply. Test it if you can. If not, borrow a good one and try it.

SOURCE: mac ibook begins to start then screen says I need to restart....

Can you start in safe mode? If you have windows, when the computer starts click F8 during the boot process and select start in safe mode. If this does let you start in safe mode and your computer boots then everything will look big on the screen ignore that for now. If you recently added any new hard ware or software that you think may be conflicting your boot procedure then uninstall it, if not restore your computer to an earlier time when you never had any problems. Do this by pressing Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore and choose a date when you know that your computer was working with no problems.

If your computer does not let you start in safe mode. Then reboot again press F8 again and select repair. This will take you through repairing windows. Again if you cannot access this then try restoring your computer to the factory settings. This will restore your computer to when you first purchased it. So windows will still be intact. If your computer has a seperate partition with the restore files on then when your boot your computer press F2 to enter the bios. Make sure that D2D recovery is enabled then reboot, when the mac screen appears hold down Alt and press F10 continuously until the recovery program appears then follow the instruction on the screen.

I hope this helps

When you say recovery disk I assume you mean the main OS disk. A recovery disk on a mac generally is one you would make as a back up. Depending on the OS you used you would need to get a new one. These you can pick up from eBay pretty cheaply, both OS9 and OSX10.4.

SOURCE: laptop dead. power surge.

Hi there,
You need to reset the Power Management Unit. The instructions for most models are here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US
Choose the one for your model part way down the page. Once reset you should be up and running again.

When you power on the (apple) or (mac os x) iBook model#A1005 ( NTBOE004010) a screen comes on and ask for username and password. i purchased this computer ibook second hand so how do i proceed from here...

Hi there,
Congratulations on your new computer! What you need to do is reinstall the operating system, after wiping the computer:
  1. Turn the Mac on and insert the restoration disk that came with it (If you don't have one then you'll need to get one, try ebay or amazon, or an Apple store).
  2. Turn the Mac off with the disk still in
  3. Re-boot it, holding down the C key. This will boot up from the CD, and hopefully you'll be able to re-install Mac OS X, which will give you a working, clean machine.
When you get to step 3, you should have a menu bar at the top. Select Utilities -> Disk Utility. Select the computer's hard drive, and 'Erase'. Call the new partition whatever you like, but make sure it uses Mac OS Journaled Extended file system. Follow the instructions and you'll have a machine like new!
If you don't already have an install disk, watch out - you can only install Mac OS up to Mac OS 10.5 on your iBook. Don't buy a 10.6 (Snow leopard) disk, as it won't install!
Hope that helped, good luck!

Ibook a1005 won't start .My daughter had a ipod touch from China plugged in- it shut off and won't attemt to start. The battery is full and has a new power cord.Is there a reset somewhere?

Ok, there is something you can do to try to fix this. You need to reset the power management circuits - it's very simple, just follow these instructions:
  1. Firstly, try a less drastic approach - hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds. This may succeed in starting up your iBook.
  2. If that doesn't work, you need to reset the power management. Unfortunately, there are plenty of different models of iBook and many have different ways of resetting. You'll need to consult this guide to decide which way will work for your model.
If you need a hand figuring out what type iBook you have, just ask, and I can guide you through figuring it out. Same goes if you don't understand some of the instructions.
Hope that helped, good luck!

My Ibook A1005 (2002) model, just wont boot up,I press the power on button, the Apple sign comes up,and it just continues to load with no results!!!!It was working just fine, can anyone assist me

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having - there are several things that could be causing this.
Firstly, if you have the original disks that came with the computer, try turning it on, loading the restore disk in, and then restarting, holding down the C key. This will boot from the CD, and you'll hopefully be given a set of options. If that works but you don't know what to do next, please let me know.
If that doesn't work, then I'll need some more info. Boot up the iBook, and hold down the Command and V keys - this will boot in verbose mode, which gives you more information about what's happening. See if the computer gets stuck at one particular instruction - then let me know what it is, and I may be able to suggest how to sort out the problem.
Hope that helped, good luck!

If your iBook loads to the Apple logo with a spinning gear beneath it but does not progress past that point, follow the instructions in the following article to attempt to resolve the issue:

Describe your cannot start ibook G3Problem it simply does not start, battery is ok and I have tried to take the battery away and back in its place, but nothing what can I do?

Make sure your iBook is plugged in to the wall. Hold down the power button for a few seconds. If that doesn't work, try holding down Command (the Apple key)-Option-P-R (hold all four keys down) and press the power button. Be sure to hold the power button for a few seconds whenever you turn it on.

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU). This is kind of a "last resort," according to Apple. Don't do this all the time.
  1. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
If you have a very old iBook, you may have to unplug your iBook, remove the battery, and
  1. Press and release the reset button located above the Audio/Video port on the left side of the iBook (Dual USB) computer by inserting the end of a paper clip into the small hole and gently pressing the switch once.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the AC power adapter.
  4. Put the battery back in the computer.
  5. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
(If it still doesn't start, do you hear the fans going?)

Good luck! Let us know if these steps solve your issue.

A1005 Battery and power supply fine - but not starting

A1005 is an inexact marketing identifier covering pretty much the entire line of G3 iBooks.
Complete failure to start -- unless it is caused by something trivial like a broken start button -- without any startup or error tones, points to basic logic board failure. A machine this stone dead for no apparent reason is unlikely to be revived, and almost certainly not by third-world techs who don't know Macs. It is debatably cost-effective to resuscitate a sub-GHz G3 iBook from such a failure, compared to replacing the unit with another new or used Mac. The drive in the old Mac can be extracted so as to preserve your data, and can be inserted into an external USB or FireWire case to be accessible to a new Mac.

Cant turn on

If you have the problem with no chime, no screen light up, and fans at max, it may be possible to fix it. It is often a design flaw in the soldering process.
Press firmly down on the left of the mouse pad when you press the power button (or try holding it in your left hand with your thumb by the touch mouse and fingers under the mac pressing firmly on the bottom) if it chimes. or even boots when this is done you can find a shop that does soldering(micro soldering) and have them fix the chip thats lose. Or for a quick fix try this site http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/ he shows the most common chip that comes lose.
All but 3 or 4 failed iBook's that had the fans start and nothing else, seem to have this problem(that I've seen) but Mac refuses to say it's a defect in all country's but Denmark (because a official study was done there that proved it was a manufacturers defect that each time you power on/off the iBook the solder gets a little looser.)
