What David has explained, is absolutely correct, for a pool that has a pump working in tandem with an anti-entrapment safety system. Upon inserting a vacuum hose into the skimmer, you change the vacuum differential or suction differential and it is sensed by this safety system, and the pump will turn off. So as David suggested, that you put into manual mode or some systems call it override or service override.

But if no such system is installed, and you lose prime when the vacuum hose is inserted, again you have increased the requirement for suction/vacuum, and any integrity sacrifice of your suction line, air will be sucked in through that part of plumbing where the integrity has been sacrificed!
I would check to see if your vac hose is sound? Any hole? Dog bites? Cracking because of age, etc.

Another thing, you didn't mention if you had primed your hose?
did you insert properly to prime the hose?
before a vacuum hose, sections of short hoses on an in pool suction cleaner are attached to the suction port, whether skimmer or dedicated cleaner port, that hose has to be FREE OF ANY AIR!
You must prime it...
with either the vacuum head or pool cleaner at bottom of pool and the rest of hose on the deck, slowly start feeding the hose into the pool, pushing in a straight line down along the pool wall. This method ensures you are pushing hose down as water is filling the hose with water even at waters level. So, when finally get to the end of hose, water should spill out! If it did not, you did it wrong. Be patient and try again, slower this time.
If this has been the problem, over time you will get the hang of it, and you will be able to speed up this process!

SOURCE: Pool pump starts & stops on its own outside of programmed run

There are several potential problems:

  • freeze protection circuit causing pump to start - could be a bad outside air temperature sensor.
  • It is possible the new relay is bad.
  • There could be a short in the control wires to the relay
  • old programming shadow stuck in memory (not likely since you changed the boards)
Yes, the starting and stopping can harm your pump.

SOURCE: I have a Pentair Intelliflo pump system and lately

Your pipe could be clogged or you may have a clog in the impeller. Check the pump basket and if it is cracked then it is probally in the impeller and you may be able to reach it with a screwdriver and needlenose. If you have a crack in the skimmer basket it could be in the line and you can check this by putting a kitchen sponge in the skimmer and if it comes out in the pump the line is clear. If it is clogged you may be able to clear it with a flush bag you can get at any hardware store. If that dosn't do it you will need to get a pro. Good luck.

SOURCE: wirng connecions for 110v pentair pool motor???

Next, as a suggestion. Purchase an Emerson Pool motor. The electrical connection is the same for 110/220 volts. All you have to do is move the switch by the electrical connections and select 110 or 220 volts. They usually come preset on 220 but I would check anyway. Also, don't forget the ground wire (green) and also connecting the bonding wire on the outside of the motor near the plastic cover for wiring. If you don't have bonding I would get it real soon! Hope this helps..

My new Optiflow pump seems to not be pulling the water thru the sand filter and discharging as it should. Sand filter gauge fluxuates between 0 and 3 lbs of pressure.

it sounds like you may have a suction side leak on the pump. check the lid o-ring and the suction side fittings to see if there may be a possibility of air being sucked into the pump and causing it to act like it's picking up prime and then losing it.

It sounds like your pool pump might have lost its prime. Make sure the lid is on and is secured tightly. Check your water level to make sure that it is above the skimmers. Make sure the suction lines, pump strainer, and pump pot are full of water. After you check these things, re-prime. If this still doesn't solve the problem, also check for clogged baskets and worn out gasket/valve. Make sure that you don't have an visible air leaking in the pool (look for bubbles).

sounds like a priming problem. look at the check valve in front of the pump in the suction line. sounds as if it is loosing its prime so you don't have enough water close enough to the pump to get it primed.
