Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

It has to do with the way computers count. Computers count in binary where we count in decimal.
Hard drive makers list there drives capacities in the decimal format, where windows lists it in it's binary format.
Wikipedia has a good explanation.

Also, the drive may have some preinstalled software on it that could be taking up a bit of space (it's usually not much).

If formatting is not working, means there is some problem in the data segments of the disk.

SOURCE: My external hard drive is not working right

If your drive is in good condition, you will be able to make a new partition ,if it is not seen in my computer, you will have to go to control panel, find administrative tools icon, click on it,click on storage, and drive should be seen here.Place mouse pointer on drive hash mark. Right click on mouse you will give you option to create partition also to format drive.

Try a new usb cable or a different usb enclosure.

Also try and remove the drive from it's enclosure and connect direct to a sata port on a desktop pc.

Simpletech 320gb hard drive

the hard drive inside of the external device is damaged. probably the drive head scratched one or more of the platters inside of the drive. this is a common occurance with laptops and computers when they take a dive off of a desk.

need to either get a replacement drive or another external hard drive.
