Pull off the cover at the end of the generator and locate a 2 lead capacitor, it should read 130UF 200V and replace it, they often go bad and you will not have any output if they are. colman has them for 20.00 shipped. 1-800-445-1805

Try replacing the capacitor. You can buy it from http://www.jackssmallengines.com/do_it_home.html. When you pull off the power end of the generator look at the diodes also. If they look toasted replace them as well

This sound like a loss of residual magnetism in the generator. The field will need to be "flashed".This is also known as re-exciting the field of the generator.
The Coleman manual gives these steps:
1Use a 6 Volt lantern batters (dry cell) or a 12 Volt automotive battery.
2.Disconnect all loads from generator.
3. Remove the brush cover (that's the rectangular plastic cover on the end of the generator.)
4. Plug a lamp or light into the generator before starting the engine. The light will illuminlate when ?Voltage has returned.
5. Start the engine with no load connected to the generator.
6. Attach the "-" lead of the battery to the negative brush. Very briefly touch the "+" lead of the battery to the positive brush. Remove as soon as Voltage builds up.

Check the voltage sent to the field when running. It will probably be around 12 volts. You can try connecting a lantern battery BRIEFLY to the field to re-magnetize the field. Try bothe polarites.

Some have had a bad rectifier and one had a bad transformer that generaates the low voltage from the generated output. He had a broken wire from the winding to the wire from the transformer. He was able to reconnect the failed solder joint.

Testimonial: "Thanks for info. I had it solved. I found the 130uf 200V rated cap was bad. 12 volts to the brushed did re-energize the field, power is operating. TY"

Well, its not exactly a published procedure, but this is what I would do.

Check field for continuity between leads, as well as continuity from each lead to the core. Between leads, you should have continuity, but you shouldn't be able to measure anything (perhaps in megohm range) between leads and core.

Once you have continuity, check your diode. You should have continuity in one direction only. If not, replace diode. Don't worry about capacitor / regulator at this moment.

Check stator winding for continuity between leads, (don't forget the 12 volt winding too), as well as between each lead and the core. You should not have continuity to the core from any lead.

Make sure breakers are reset, then check continuity through them. Should have it, replace if not. Same goes for the outlet itself.

Reassemble the engine, and start it. Check for a DC voltage at the 12volt battery charger port. If you have it, then your capacitor / regulator is shot. If you don't have it, replace the diode (even if checked good) and the capacitor / regulator. If still don't have 120vac, you can try to flash the field by momentarily touching a small lamp battery (6 volt lantern) to the core, and to one of the brushes. Just for a moment. Then restart. Exact flashing instructions are usually in the user manual.

Have fun!

Generator will run but no voltage output

Check the obvious, make sure the breaker is on, as this genset requires that breaker to be closed. Check to see if you have power on the generator / not laod side of the circuit breaker. If you do then the problem is the breaker, if not you need to dig deeper, and mesure the stator resisitance, most likely is the rotor excitation capacitor is open, this was common on those units, and will prevent excitation.

Powermate 5000 generator motor working .no elektricity

If the genset is working but there is no output then it is possible that the circuit breaker has TRIPPED due to short in the line. So remove the load to the genset and power the engine . Now switch on the mains switch and see if there is output. It there is no output then it is possible that there are problems in the ALTERNATOR. You will need to check if there is safety cut off/fuse that has failed or there is problems in the wiring.

I have a 3500w coleman generator I use to run my 5th wheel. It works fine until I turn on the air conditioner, then it sounds like it is bogging down and will not power the A/C.

Hello, I will make the assumption that your A/C runs fine when you are tethered to shore power. You will need to calculate your load. Add up the amps of everything in use, including the A/C. 3500W is the peak momentary output; look at your data sheet or tag to determine your continuous output, which will be less. It's possible that you're either pulling too many amps for your genset or there may be an issue with your A/C. Turn everything else off, and start the A/C. If the generator bogs down, you may not have enough generator. If it doesn't bog down, turn on your other items, one at a time. Ideally, your generator should have enough output to power everything in your 5th wheel, plus ehough extra for initial starting surge, like for your A/C, fridge, etc.. It sounds like your amps are close, but not quite there.

Engine runs but no power aat outlet????

Start with brushes and rings. Make sure your rings are clean and the your brushes have a good length. Flash the fields with 12V battery. Apply positive to the brush nearest the bearing and negative to the back brush, while genset is running. Use rubber gloves when doing this and keep hands away from rotating parts. You should see the voltage climb when you flash the fields. This would mean that you need a voltage regulator. If voltage does not climb, then you will need a new genset.

Running but putting out power

You need to remove the cover where the outlets are at and measure the voltage before the breaker. There are no fuses on the output side of the genset only breakers. If breaker is fine but still no output, try flashing the fields with a 12 volt battery. If voltage increases then your voltage regulator is bad.

6.5 RV Onan generaotr wont kick in when loaded. checked automatic transfer switch and excited it manually, worked one time but never again,

1. Does the generator stay running when you start it the first time?

2. What color is the housing on this generator? Try to get the model number and serial number.

If the genset is shutting down on the first try, then your probably not creating voltage. However, if this is an older unit then the genset may stay running although no voltage is created. Place a volt meter on the genset to check for output voltage.
