Problem with Craftsman YTS4500 Hyrostatic Transmission Lawntractor Belt and possibly Tranny Model 917289900

Ok, here is my problem. My tractor mower kept throwing the drive belt while I was mowing so I replaced the belt. It is still doing it so that it now the problem. As I was doing the lawn yesterday it threw the belt one last time and when I reset the belt, NOW IT JUST WONT MOVE. Everything is set up properly and I am afraid it is the transmission. It has been squealing a little bit lately while going in reverse. I have been reading a little bit about the hydro transmission fluid but some say it is a sealed unit. HONESTLY, I took the rear wheels off and can't even access the transmission top area without taking the axle off. Obviously not a normal service for the average homeowner. This is the Craftsman YTS4500 Kohler 26HP Model 917289900 54" Deck. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank all.

So I took off the wheels and found that 2 bolts have snapped off of the transaxle (transmission) that held it onto the chassis. Also resulting from (I'm Sure) (or vise versa) 2 bolts were ripping a part of the chassis at the ends of where the wheels are also causing the transmission to hang down about an inch or so lower than normal. I don't know if this is what would be causing the belt to be thrown out of whack but I am sure this is not helping. Ugh, what a mess. Now I need to find a lawnmower shop willing to fix this and weld this. Boy I hope this won't cost too much.

Oh, and found out the problem about it not moving, It was just the drive belt was not placed properly. Last time it was thrown off, it was thrown so out of place it totally skipped out of place I missed a pulley. Anyways. Now I have a whole new set of problems. Thanks for your options thus far guys.

Add a CommentAnd as for the sqealing, it seams to be coming from inside the transmission. Hmmm.

SOURCE: Craftsman Transmission problem

Some of these tractors have a friction wheel that is driven off of a flat wheel on the bottom of the engine drive shaft. The rubber ring on this friction wheel could be worn out, or it could be out of adjustment.

In the back of the mower...probably under the seat, there should be a lever to release the transmission, or it is on the back plate. As far as the noise when trying to move drive the mower, the brake in the back, next to the transmission is jammed, use a 1/2 inch wrench to loosen it maybe 1/4 turn and this should unlock the brakes

Why doesnt my MTD 42" lawn tractor move but it will start?

If the transmission is belt drive, check the belt, worn/oily? If you have a hydrastat tranny, make sure that the bypass plunger is pushed in. Check that the belt goes around the tranny pulley. If still no luck, turn mower off, jack up and support the rear frame, with the real wheels hanging in the air(just an inch or two is plenty) try turning the wheels -1st, with the gear selector in "N". then 2nd, with the gear selector in "D". This should narrow the problem down a bad tranny or a sheared keyway in the axle.

If this is a hydro unit and it runs ok forward there should be no other reason other than linkage adjustment for it not to run in reverse, for safety reasons they are normally adjusted to run slower in reverse

sign of a failing hydrostatic tranny. however 3 years is pretty quick for a transmission unless mower was used commercially. make sure your drive belt is snug.

There is no tension adjustment it has an idler pulley working off from a spring. Check to make sure that the spring did not come off or break. If neither of these have happened then the belt is stretched and you need to purchase a new one.

Tractor has a very touchy clutch

When you change the transmission, also change the drive belt?
One of the most often cause of transmission problems are the inadequate drive belt. The length should be the same as the manufacturer specification. Also the drive belt surface quality is very important. Keep in mind that the "clutch" is a simple mechanism that depends on the slipping belt feature and its right lenght. Frequenty users cange the belt and use an automotive type belt.

Let me know some news about your problem.
Have a grat day!
