"A proper noun is a noun that in its primary application refers to a unique entity, such as London, Jupiter, Sarah, or Microsoft, as distinguished from a common noun, which usually refers to a class of entities (city, planet, person, corporation), or non-unique instances of a certain class (a city, another planet, these persons, our corporation)...." [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proper_noun]

and

a noun that is used to denote a particular person, place, or thing, as Lincoln, Sarah, Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Hall. [see http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/proper+noun ]

A proper noun usually is a thing that has a name, as opposed to just an example of that type of thing. For example The Earth [capital E] is different from the earth [little e]. The former refers refers to a unique planet, while latter refers to the soil or ground [anywhere]

What is a noun worksheets

Wherever you are, look around you. Identify 10 objects. Write their names down in a list. Common nouns are nouns that have many references (or that can refer to many objects.)
If I say The Round Table, you gather that I am talking about King Arthur's table, a unique idea. (proper noun).
However if I say:
In the kitchen there was a round table and a few chairs
there is nothing specific about that round table, just a table that happens to be round. (common noun).
A city (common noun) could be any city, anywhere in the world and the Moon, but the City (proper noun) refers to a specific place in London.
