SOURCE: scanning a black vertical line down the left side of the document

funny thing. I cleaned it. I had looked before, but didn't see the line on the surface of the glass so i thought it was internal. A closer 2nd look revieled a distinct line on the surface of the glass, probably from pen or marker ink that wasnt dry.

Scanner repaired, pride slightly damaged. thanks for the response

SOURCE: I have a Fujitsu fi-5110C

Hello, Jim.

The most common cause is from a particle of ink or dust that is attached to the lamp or the glass covering the lamp. As the page runs over the lamp, it registers that spot as black and causes a line to run the length of the page.

To fix this, simply remove the particle from the glass or lamp. The location of the particle will correspond to the location of the line on the page. So note which side of the page this occurs.

Here's an article from eHow regarding cleaning the scanner glass: http://www.ehow.com/how_14267_clean-scanner.html

Pay attention to that black particle.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: I have a solid line

You need to open up the unit and clean all pieces of glass. There is something on the glass causing the line.

Print Problem - vertical lines

If the problem only occurs when using the document feeder, the problem is not usually caused by the drum. When using the document feeder, try to notice where the scanner (the light assembly under your scan glass)stops just before the paper is being fed. Some multifunction machines have a small piece of glass that is separate from the large scan glass and the scanner assembly stays parked underneith it as the original is being fed over it. Most likely there is something on the glass where the scanner parks as originals are being fed thru the feeder. When putting your original on the large scan glass to copy, the mark on the glass will only show as a spot, but will show as a vertical line thru the whole copy when using the feeder.

Scanner inserts vertical line on some documents

Clean the glass with IsoPropyl Alcohol. Dont use any other solvent. A speck of dust stuck to the glass can give a continuous line in the output
