SOURCE: how to thread the bobbin on a singer simple sewing machine

Drop-in bobbin: Note: thread must change direction when entering bobbin shuttle notch. Usually bobbin will turn counter-clockwise when threaded properly.

1. hold bobbin so that the tail of thread is facing to left.
2. drop bobbin into bobbin shuttle.
3. pull thread toward you.
4. guide thread into notch and pull to left so that slot engages thread.
5. pull thread diagonally across shuttle toward back of machine.
6. draw bobbin thread up through needle plate with threaded needle.

SOURCE: I have a Singer Touch N Sew Model 636. The

I had a Golden Touch 'N Sew many years ago and as the machine aged and parts became worn, step 4 of this bobbin winding diagram started to become a problem and I had to sometimes try several times before the "tabs" would release. If they did not release, the machine "thought" it was still winding the bobbin and would not sew.

SOURCE: I have an old singer sewing machine 401A. The top

You can download a manual for $10 at www.sewingmanuals.com and it should help you. A couple of suggestions though, is your needle inserted correctly? Flat side facing the rear of the machine, fresh needle? Threaded correctly on top and bobbin area? Is your thread good not too old and the same type in bobbin and top? Did you leave a long enough tail in the bobbin thread? 3-4 inches which you hold with your left hand. Is the thread in the bobbin unwinding the right way? Are you turning the handwheel towards you, not away from you at least two revolutions or until you see the thread loop? Try these suggestions, and I am sure one will work unless your timing is off and it needs professional service.

How to thread the singer 20u33? The tension assembly is new, don't know where the wire is sposed to be...

When you thread the top thread, the thread will drop down on the right side of the tension mechanism and go around the bottom (clockwise) and up the left side. Grab the thread somewhere above the tension mechanism with your right hand and then pull the toward the right (as though you are going to close the circle around the tension disk. The thread should pull on the metal wire (spring) and your thread should pop into the correct position of the tension disk. When you release the thread, the wire spring should pop back to the left. Then you will continue threading through the remaining thread guides and the take-up lever.

Here's a service manual for your machine (in case you need one):

Having trouble with tension loose threads on back of material

Your upper thread tension is too loose. Tighten it a little and test. (Righty-tighty, Lefty-loosey.) When the upper thread and bobbin thread meet in the middle of your fabric, the tension is correct.

My machine turns on but it doesn't actually sew. The needle just pokes holes in the fabric and I don't know how to fix it

Is the bobbin full of thread, and is the needle threaded?
These are very inexpensive machines; some will only sew with what is in them when delivered, then you buy another. :-(

The bottom thread under fabric loops.

Went to the internet and googled singer sewing machines. Found article re trouble shooting. Article advised that either tension was incorrect or machine was threaded incorrectly. It was the latter.

Inserting needle on old singer machine

Hi Terry--

If your machine is 40-50 years old, it might be a Singer Featherweight portable. (If it is, you have one of the very best machines ever made!) On the Featherweights, the flat of the needle faces left (and the needle is threaded from right to left). The bobbin goes in a bobbin case; you'll see a small notch when you look down on the bobbin in the case. That's where the thread goes. I'll email you direct with more information.
