How to restore a Gateway GM5088 to factory settings without the recovery disc's?

There are two options: get the recovery disks from Gateway (if possible), or use a generic copy of your OS and hope it takes the COA key you have. The steps for obtaining the disks are to call Gateway or go to eBay and put in what you need. It may cost you but it's a lot less than the time you are going to use up going the generic method.

The generic method means using a CD or DVD of the same operating system, booting from it, installing Windows and using the COA key on your system. Once you have completed the basic installation you will then need to go to Gateway and download any drivers that are not working or are missing. Do pay attention to the video driver in particular as Windows will sometimes put in a generic, underperforming driver for your video and not tell you it isn't working correctly. Look in device manager and examine the display driver to see if it matches the actual video your system came with.

Finally, once you have the OS and drivers in place, you will need to re-install your other hardware: cameras, printers, scanners, portable nuclear devices, etc....(just checking to see if you have read this far...LOL). In the end you will have most of what your Gateway came with, but maybe not all. Third-party programs are generally not downloadable from Gateway and only appear on the restore CD/DVD set. Without them you may lose the trial version of Office, or Norton Anti-virus, or whatever.

I set a password to my laptop and I can't remember what it is, how can I get to use my laptop again??

@pinkruthpink

The quickiest way to reset your password is to run System Recovery (aside paying someone from a local computer store and use a software to reset it). Gateway laptops have a built-in recovery mode on the system wherein you can restore the computer to factory default without using a restore discs. (please note that this will erase everything). The hotkey for the recovery is the ALT+F10 key. After you press the power button, you need to hold ALT key and then simultaneously press the F10 key.. Once the recovery menu has loaded, click Restore to Factory Default Settings.

Good luck

How to reboot my gateway nv53 laptop to factory without a cd bought this laptop used starting to have problems so i want to erase everything and make it like new

Hi.

The laptop may have a hidden recovery partion which you can access from boot up. Turn the laptop off and then restart it. When you see the Gateway logo hold down Alt and repeatedly press the F10 key. From there follow the on-screen instructions to restore the laptop to factory defaults, it should take about half an hour but could be longer.

Remember to back up any data that you want before you restore the system.

If you can't access the recovery partition then you can use Windows to do it for you. Click on the Start Menu> All Programs>Gateway and then Gateway Recovery Management. In the Gateway Recovery window click on Restore and then select Restore System to factory default and follow the on-screen instruction. The computer will restart and proceed with the restore.

Regards.

I have a Gateway MT-6451 laptop and want to restore to factory condition. I lost the disk. Is there anyway I can perform this without the disk? Or a way to purchase the disk?

The disc is critical when you want to go back to factory settings, check out www.ebay.com there are sellers that provide a lot of different restore discs, you might get lucky. The other option is check www.gateway.com see if the have the supporting disc.

I didn't get a disk to restore to factory in the box. Do I need to buy that seperate, from the factory?

Here's the support page from Gateway for your model.
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2009/Ajax2/MD26/MD26nv.shtml

And here's the user guide link (which you can find at the page mentioned above)
http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Desktops/8513015.pdf

and below are the steps from the user guide which to me seems like the solution for your question.

To create discs, click (Start), All Programs, Gateway, then click Gateway Recovery
Management. To create recovery discs for your factory-loaded hard drive contents (Windows
Vista, pre-installed software and drivers), click Create factory default disc or, to create recovery
discs for only the factory-loaded drivers and software, click Create driver and application
backup disc. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish.

Reformating my gateway E 4100

reformatting a drive is a big undertaking, formating the drive will erase everything, including viruses, before you format you need to make sure you have all the discs including the windows disc, driver discs, and a factory restore disc, also you make check the documentation on your system because alot of the gaetway, dell, emachines systems have restore partitions installed on the drive. Also youll need alot of coffee and alot of time, most importantly aside from the windows disc youll need a driver disc for any ethernet or wireless card you have installed. without this you will not have access to the internet most likely and donloading updated drivers is very helpful. This is a time consuming proccess unless there is a restore partition on the harddrive, the documentation will tell you how toaccess it if it exists, if not a restore disc will be nice.
