Re: Powering off

Hi 256male,

  1. You posted twice for the same problem. Cleanup the internal parts of your PS2.
  2. Remove the screw covers and 8 screws.
  3. Cut the warranty seal at the seams.
  4. Lift the top cover from the rear, and pull forward, then roll it to the left. Preserve the Reset Eject ribbon.
  5. Remove the two screws on both sides of the controller port.
  6. Remove the screws to the right and left of the Power socket.
  7. Lift the guts out from the back.
  8. You should be able to see how much dust and lint buildup you have .
  9. Clean everything using a dry paint brush.
  10. Reassemble

I think this issue is common among PS2, fixing it might cost you more than actually picking up one that is used from eBay. if you do want to try fixing it yourself you can try looking at some homemade YouTube videos, however it's not guaranteed that your problem would be exactly the same as displayed in the videos.

When after powering up and I had press enter, it would say CAN NOT READ DISC.

There are THREE reasons that a Slim PS2 will not read discs. I will start from most common and end at the least common (almost rare) problem.

1. A bad laser. Lasers labor on Playstation 2 [and all other video game] consoles. They eventually fail, especially if you use your PS2 as a DVD player. You can find Slim PS2 lasers at the following website. They are pretty simple to replace:

2. There are two "lid closed" sensors on the Slim Playstation 2. They let the PS2 know that the lid is shut and it should scan for a disc. Sometimes one or both of these sensors can become broken. It doesn't really happen by itself... usually if someone drops the console, one or both of the sensors can break or become dislodged.

3. A Bad Motherboard: This is rare. We mostly see this if someone installed a mod chip into the system and it eventually fails.

Click into the following website for Do It Yourself troubleshooting to determine why your PS2's discs aren't spinning, and how to fix it.

PS2 Shuts Itself Down

hmm, annoyingly this is quite a common problem on the early releases of the slimline Ps2 models. The power supply units get to hot and can cause this problem. I'd recommend getting an updated PSU unit which will be available online

PS2 only getting a red light - not powering on

Is the system fat or slim?
If its fat then it is the internal power supply.
a 12$ total fix from parts via ebay takes 10-15 min to take apart and re-assemble. I can help you step by step let me know.

PS2 (fatty Model) Does not power on

No! absolutely do NOT open the PS2. You will make a huge mistake especially since you dont know what to look for. Besided, if someone here tells you it is one thing, how do they know for sure? Just go with the Warranty.

Ps2 will power off

Hi 256Male

Look at the fan in the back and see if it is running. Souns like your PS2 is overheating. Sometimes so much dust and lint build up on the fan it stops. You will merely need to clean it up on the inside.

Old ps2 wont turn on

First thing I would think would cause this problem is a faulty power supply. Since it is shutting off very quick, I would think that there is a bad diode in the supply. The instant you put a load on it (i.e. turning it on)it quits. Sounds like you need to replace the supply or the unit which ever will be more cost effective for you. Depending on the model PS2 that you have, replacement power supplies are all over the internet. Hope this helps. Good luck.
