SOURCE: Blinking Protect Mode

You are right! There's a good chance you BLEW IT UP, so to speak! But there is hope... [Note: There are no fuses on this unit, inside or out. There IS, however, an internal overload protection system designed to prevent permanent damage. With no disrespect Sony, it is not a very ample system. That is, it simply doesn't do its job very well. However, there is a CHANCE a reputable service center can reset it, but don't get your hopes up.] But before you take it in for service, it is also a REMOTE possibility you will get lucky doing one of the following: FIRST, what happens when you DISCONNECT ALL OF THE SPEAKERS? Does it still go into Protect mode? (If it does, it's time for service.) If not, then you might simply have a bad speaker (rare); a shorted wire; or improper speaker impedence: The NEXT STEP, then, is to make certain ALL of your speakers have an IMPEDENCE of 8 OHMS. Virtually all speakers of even modest quality will include this specification on a label on the back of the speaker. You CANNOT run more than (2) TWO speakers with 4 OHMs impedence on ANY amplifier (technical discussion too long!) Finally, in switching your speakers around for the party, and then again afterwards, you may have crossed a wire; ran a staple through one; or have bare wires touching at one (or more) of the speakers. Check first for bare wires touching one another. This would put your Sony into Protect mode the instant you turn it on. If everything looks okay at the speakers, then reconnect them to the receiver, and test them ONE AT A TIME. For example, reconnect the left front speaker, test the system; THEN add the right front, test the system, and so on, ADDING one more speaker each time - FIRST MAKING SURE EACH OF THEM HAS AN IMPEDENCE OF AT LEAST 8 OHMS! IF there is a short (or bad speaker) this will help isolate it. Assuming the unit powers-up without speakers, then one of these simple fixes might prove worthwhile! GOOD LUCK!

SOURCE: Sony STR DB-930 Receiver jumping into protector mode

I went through the amp/receiver and used small star washers on all the grounding screws I could find including the one securing the transformer, cleaned dust off all circuit boards, checked output transistors and fuses, all OK.

Re Assembled unit and it worked OK.

I will buy a fan and fan it to avoid sourcing heatsinks for the previusly suggested IC's.

Thanks for the technical help, sure solved my problem.

Sony Receiver STR-DE325 is saying protect

If the unit does turn without protect without the speakers,

then you just found the cause.

If the unit is still in protect it needs servicing.

Have a tech to guide you if you need to DIY.

Board level troubleshooting is the next thing to do.

these may take some time, but i do hope youll make it.

Having problems with my SONY str-db798 amp. When i turn it on (without any speakers or even with speakers) it flashes "PROTECT" and shuts down. Any suggestions how to deal with it without getting...

Press and hold down the power button on the front panel until you hear a secondary "click" from inside the chassis. That takes about 15 seconds.

Then read my tutorial on how to keep your receiver out of protect mode.

I need the code to input to a universal remote for my Sony STR-DE325. Please help.

I just got mine to work with the STR-DE325. I programmed my Dish receiver remote following the reference in the back of the Dish receiver manual. I missed the comment at the beginning of the receiver codes at first which stated to enter a 2 before setting a tuner/amplifier code on aux. I then used the first code listed which was 683 and it works. So it was hold aux on the remote, wait until the aux was enabled by blinking, enter 2, enter 683 for the Dish remote and enter pound. E. When I turn the unit on it will stay on for a few seconds then goes to protect mode. any ideas?

See page 17.

Disconnect all speakers and see if that helps. Shorted speakers or wiring will cause this. If it still does it a trip to a hands-on tech is called for.

Won't go off protect mode

When the speaker wires shorted to each other, the output transistors for that channel probably shorted as well. This means that the receiver needs repair. The typical parts cost for this usually runs between $20-$40.

When iturn on my Sony STR-DE325 it goes into protect mode

Try disconnecting all of your speakers, and then turn on you unit. If you have a defective speaker, or a short in your wires, your unit will go into protect mode. If your unit seems ok with the speakers disconnected, then turn unit off, hook up one of the speaker leads and try it. This way you can isolate the problem.......

Good Luck,

PROTECT DISPLAYED ON RECEIVER

This generally means you've got a short somewhere, and the received is trying to protect itself.

My suggestion is to disconnect all of your speakers at both ends, and reconnect them.

Most times this happens because a speaker wire is lose, and the positive and negative connections are touching each other, causing it to short out.
