PSS - Pink Screen Syndrome

I purchased this tv at an estate sale this afternoon for $150. I noticed the pink tint; however, it also had a sign attached which read "Needs New Bulb - $300". I figured he was being honest about the deficiency so I purchased it. After reading all of these expensive problems with light engines, etc. I am very concerned. I found a bulb on eBay for $109 and I pray this puts an end to the PSS. Whatcha think?

My television has a pink tint to it. The lamp may be close to 250 hrs or so.

I recently read through all articles on Hitachi light engine issues. The "Pink Blob" is related to bad light engines. If you have a uniform pink hue on screen: turn television input to input channel that is not being used (should have a blank screen) shut tv off. Have television off for 2 minutes hold input button and turn on television. Let go of button after5 seconds. Television will have service menu on it. Hit menu on remote, this should bring you to 2nd page. Scroll down to Mem init box w/ remote. Hold joystick button to right til check mark is seen on square for mem init. Let go of joystick and this will re initialize memory. This fixed my pink hue issue and I did not need light engine. Remember to change your input to that of an unused one. Otherwise you will not be able to reinit memory.

Your problem is not the bulb, it's a defective light engine and Hitachi is aware of it. Replacing the bulb will not fix the problem. You will have to have a certified tech come out and confirm the problem before Hitachi will own up to it and send out a new light engine. They will pay for the part (around $1500) but you will have to pay to have the tech come out and the install. It cost us about $500 total. It was worth it to us because we paid $3600 for this TV about 3 years ago. If you only paid $150, does not sound worth the cost. You will be wasting your money if you get the bulb first. Good Luck.

I'm not an expert regarding television sets so I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. I will tell you that before we had our light engine changed a week ago, we could play DVD's and there was no pink hue in the middle of the screen...just when we watched regular TV. The unfortunate thing is that a certified tech is the only one that can tell you for sure. Sure sounds like a light engine problem to me. Since this is your second problem with this, I would call Hitachi Customer Relations department (not Customer Service) and tell them this is the second time you've had this problem. They're still going to ask that you have a certified tech come out to make sure that's the problem but I would DEMAND that they pay the service call cost and the install...if the TV needs a second light engine. Hitachi has really stepped up to the plate and has become easier to deal with.

It seems like to me that most of us bought our sets between 2-3 years ago. I know that when my husband and I bought our Hitachi, it was the first generation. Should not matter. If you send, in our case, $3600 on a TV, you would certainly expect it to last longer than 3 years. Heck, you can buy a regular Sanyo and it will last forever! Our tech told us that Hitachi is doing whatever it takes to make everyone happy. I seriously doubt that they will recall the TV, due to the tons of money they will's always about money, but they seem to have become more willing to solve the problem. In my opinion, they should pay for it all...the light engine, the service call and the install.

Sure sounds like a light engine problem to me??? Good Luck!

I see the post stating that they had a pink hue and that once they reintialized the settings, the pick hue was gone. When our tech came out the first time, he said within seconds that it was a defective light engine. He tried to reintialize the settings and it did not work for us, but maybe depending on the individual circumstances, it would work. I would certainly try that first before going to the trouble and expense of getting a new light engine. Only thing I would be careful of is doing it youself. There have been post on this blog that have said they've tried to do different things and it's made the problem worse. I'm not TV savy at all so I would be apprehensive having said that, I would much rather do a quick fix as mentioned on the above post before spending my own money!!!!!!!!

Entire screen has a pink tint. Can change to blue with settings. Cannot change to natural with tint etc.

Check that all cables are intact and plugged in correctly.
Turn of the TV completely. There might be a manual button on the tv for this. As the last thing, remove the power cord from the power outlet in the wall or where it is placed. Wait 1 min. Then put it back in, swith it on and turn on the TV again.
If this doesn't help and you have tried replacing the cable that you get the picture from (VGA, DVI, Antenna etc.) then it is most likely broken.

Color too pink/red. have tried to go to menu and get screen to adjust but have failed

The red/pink tint is caused by one of two things, either the backlight bulbs are going out or the power supply that powers the bulbs is not putting out enough voltage to fully light the bulbs. The backlights are just really small fluorescent bulbs, if they don't have full power they light with a pink tint. No amount of adjusting will correct this issue. You will need to have the TV serviced.

My hitachi 43fdx20b has a pink tint to it. I have noticed that if i move the tint slider one way or the other it will turn the screen green, but now it doesn't. Does this have something to do with my...

My 43fdx20b had a pink tint to it also. The picture was clear otherwise. I found, on mine, I needed to adjust the Red Screen control. It was located behind the front panel. I removed the two screws on either side of the front panel and was able to remove the panel. Then I adjusted the Red Screen control. I found that if I tuned in an old Black and white movie I could adjust the color fairly accurately. Good Luck.

Laptop LCD goes black after a few seconds

Yes, The pink tint is an indication that the backlight is failing. Now the backlight is basically dead, the best way to get back going is to do an Ebay search for your model laptop and get a new screen. Most screens can be purchased for around $50.00 - $70.00 and they are very easy to swap. Email me if you need more info.
