SOURCE: RCA L32WD22 with no picture.

The backlight has failed. May be the power supply for it, the inverter board or the lamps. Not something you can fix unless you are a tech.

SOURCE: I have a rca model

The tv is entering what is known as a protect mode. This happens due to failure or the components that control the amount of voltage entering a particular circuit. EX; Resistors, Voltage Regulators etc.,
The location is most likely to be the power supply board. How good are your electronics soldering skills? I would not want someone with out prior experience in working on electronic circuits to attempt it and hurt themselves.

SOURCE: Picture & sound shuts off

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps

Your backlight controller is probably faulty. Check for bad capacitors. It may be one or more inverter transformers which is faulty, inwhich case it is usually easier to replace the whole backlight
controller board.

If the image is present on the screen when a flashlight is shined from the back then the problem may be the Timing control board.

If still under guarantee take it back.
If not this sounds like a workshop job. If more than five years old (the TV, not you!) and you can afford it, junk this set and get a new one.

"32" rca tv about 3 years old was on & it went black- power light is on"

sounds like the sceen is dead, if you are receiving nothing on screen, then it sounds like either a component and/or screen is gone... however, check the tv input to make sure it wasnt acidentally switched to an input channel with nothing selected... if that does not work, call local tv repair or mfg customer service tech. if under warranty, have repaired or replaced. without physically seeing tv, it is hard to diagnose issue outside of information given. could be simple board replacement or could be screen.. but check input first, if a dvd player plays, then it could be just component or input on wrong selection

I have sound and no picture

You do not state your TV is plasma/LCD or the older tube TV.
Anyway, if your TV is plasma, the problem comes from Y-board.
If it is LCD, use flash light shines to the screen you will see pictures moving there. This case the invertor fail.
The old one have many components involved. It is hard to tell without details.

the problem with LCD tvs are that they have back lamps that shine thru the LCD sceen. the job of the screen is to block the light of the different colors to make the picture. the problem is that the very thin screen can not block all the light. if the set has a back lamp setting turn down the back lamps and adjust the brightness control it should help a little. you my notice that the blacks and dark sceens look better when the room is fully lit and look much worse in a darken room.

RCA P46922 No picture, good sound

This is due to the screen will not get the exact grid voltage. Without getting the proper screen voltage black current section will not allow to flash the channel continuously. This can be solved by adjusting the exact G2 voltage. More the deflection area is free from dust and moisture to avoid the same problem infuture.
