Nope not them models, i would just change the board, and to bypass the board you have to be a service man with a computer and equipment.

GE model gth16dberww top mount freezer. Freezer is iced over. Removed rear cover and coils are also iced over. Poured warm water into drain and water immediately exited to drip pan. not sure where to

Sounds like the defrost timer is not functioning, or a defrost element is burnt out.
#1. After an accumulative "run time", typically the timer will initiate a defrost cycle. At that point the defrost heaters are energized and the compressor is turned off for the duration of the cycle. The defrost time cycle varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and can be as low as 15 minutes to as much as a half hour. If it is defective, it could be stuck in the cooling position not initiating a defrost function.

#2. If the defrost heater element is burnt out, the timer functions normally and will cycle the defective heater on, but there will be no heat generated to defrost the ice.

#3. A more remote possibility is a defective "defrost termination thermostat" which is wired in series with the defrost element. If defective, it will keep the element from energizing on a call for defrost.

At any rate, unless you are extremely handy AND have access to a supplier of repair parts, it sounds like a service tech needs to be called.

Your problem may be with the "defrost timer" (should be located in the fresh food compartment). Typically, refrigerators have approximately 8 hours of refrigeration cycle, then approximately 30 minutes of defrost cycle. The defrost timer controls each cycle.

Contact an appliance service company.

I have a GE side by side ref. model # GSS22JFMC WW that is not cooling. A few months ago I replaced the defrosting element. It is not freezing up but for some reason it sometimes stops cooling. I can turn...

First this refrigerator has very low consumer rating. They are plagued with problems with very poor company backing. But without be able to diagnosis the problem in person I would say it's the mother board. And you may find that GE has a new updated board for your appliance. I would go to and search for your motherboard for your refrigerator and read the reviews. Some people leave some great idea. Plus it you bought this refrigerator brand new you can fight with GE to send you a new board.

Loud noise from GE Side by Side

That's usually mounts inside the compressor. It could still last awhile so if you can put up with the noise just wait for it to quit before replacing the compressor or getting a new fridge.

Side by side gss22jf,fridge at 50 degrees

A quick stop at my local appliance store with some info for the tech.
and It was clear that the problem was in the evaporator(freezer)
section. turns out the defrost element($40.00) was the culprit.
It was so easy to change. Please be certain to unplug the refridge if you try this at home. This sure beats spending another $1,000.00 on a new
fridge. Good Luck
