Question about Electrical Supplies

I have a Kohler 4cm21 K321EP generator that had ran out of oil. I refilled it, but now it will not start. Pressing the start button only gives a thump sound. What can I do to get it to start again?

You ran it without oil it sounds like the engine is locked up. when your run with no oil the engine parts go dry and get hot and damage to engine is result. You most likely will have to rebuild the engine or get a replacement engine.

    i dont have any on mine but everyone is different.. whem it ran out of oil did it stop the engine and did u see any smoke?

    hi William, i'm assuming it ran out of oil and not gas, cause I heard a low sound and I went to hit the stop switch, it would'nt stop. then it just stopped on it's on. there was no smoke. I check the oil and it was out.

More than likely it came out of the crank case vent. Your intake valve could have been stuck open (for some reason) which pressurized the crank case.

SOURCE: My 18RESL Kohler Propane Generator ran for 8.5

You have to reset it because it locked out on on under frequency. Just pullout the fuse on the control panel and then reinstall it a couple of seconds later. Now it will reset the fault codes. Hope that helps.

First thing to do is get a "Wiring Diagram" for your Unit.
Once you get the diagram, just Follow the DC Ignition Power path from
the Battery, on thru to the Ignition Coil. Somewhere you aren't getting
12Vdc to the Ignition Coil, UNLESS the Start Switch is in the Start Position. It shouldn't take longer than about a hour, with a VoltMeter to find where the circuit isn't being "Made", and fixing or replacing that part. Did you check the oil level? Some generators have a oil sensor that will now allow it to start if the oil level is too low.

Have generator showing emergency stop code and will not start.


there are too emergency stop sensors on generators
one is over load
the other is low oil level in the sump (Low oil pressure)
That sensor is known to trigger and activate the emergency stop so check it out after you check the oil level in the sump

change the oil to the correct specification first. As the engine runs the heat changes the viscosity and overheats or trips the oil alert switch. If its over 10 years old change the oil alet magnetic switch

Kohler generator wont stay on


Check the oil pressure switch, and oil level first. Then check rotor brushes and rotor slip rings may need polishing. If the problem is still there check stator and rotor windings

You didn't list model number, but I'd check the oil pressure switch and any other safetys in the circuit. Kohler makes a wide range of genaerators from small ot very large.

1975, 7.5 Kohler marine genset, runs only with the reset depresed


Can't search for a manual without model, type, serial, etc numbers...

A few things to take a look at:

1) Oil level / pressure sending unit. This is normally bypassed as long as the start switch is pressed. When engine starts, and switch is released, engine will die if sending unit is defective, or you are low on oil.

2) Exhaust temperature sensors. Older units were notorious for burning these up.

3) Cooling Water Temperature sensor. These cause trouble often, but mostly due to water pump impeller being eaten away by galvanic action and not able to pump water as effecively. End result is water temp higher than normal, which trips the switch, which kills the engine.

4) Alternator (generator) output not as it should. If output doesn't rise to proper level within a few seconds of engine start, the engine will be shut down.

5) Choke not working as it should

6) Bad fuel, bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter.
