Depending on model my first guess would be the gear from upper main shaft (horizontal) or the gear from Vertical shaft is broken

Feed dog drive gear(2) are plastic and are probably stripped. Always replace them in pairs. While you are at it replace both hook drive gears as well. It will run as good as new.

Needle shaft stuck. Machine won't work.

It's possible that you have threads wound somewhere inside the machine. Likely places are the tension unit and near the hand wheel.

How do I adjust needle depth on my Singer 590 c?

There is an Allen screw on the shaft of the needle bar that you can loosen to be able to adjust the height of the needle. Some machines also have markings as to where the needle height needs to be. My Singer Prelude machine

Hi Jos, I'm no pro but I fix lots of things. It sounds like there is a mechanical blockage that is preventing the motor from turning. If you haven't already, open all the panels or covers that reveal the mechanical workings, and remove any bobbins (and maybe the needle, if the tip is touching another part of the machine) using your hand to gently rock the motor forward and backward (unplug the cord first) look for the parts to move however slightly they may be moving. if they move with your rocking motion and stop hard, there is something that has moved out of place. Closely watch the needle tip first to see how it moves and that it and its clamp are not bumping into anything. following up the shaft, gradually and methodically look at the next parts that you can see moving, and continue checking every consecutive piece in the mech, till you've come to the back end of the motor. if you havent found the culprit by now, at least you have narrowed down the possibilities and you know your toy much better that most people. When you take it to the service man, be sure to tell him how you examined it and every thing you have learned. By giving the repairer this head start, you not only reduce their time to fix it but...they will know that you are fully aware of your machine and understand something of the problem and about troubleshooting your sewing machine. You will probably fix it yourself but if not, you wont be overcharged by anyone.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

Old singer sewing machine (306k) motor works, belt o.k. but drive to needle is very stiff needle barely moves / peter

Apply a little singer machine oil to each of the holes along the top and in the working area next to needleplate.........rock handwheel gently and make several full rotations in each direction ......... keep at the rocking and rolling periodically over several hours if should come good after a little patience and persistence. Do not apply too much oil, it will only make a mess. NOTE: Belt needs a little give to prevent motor overload, so do not overtighten.

I have a Singer Special Zig Zag Model 418. I can

More than likely you have a broken vertical shaft gear.

When you turn the handwheel you should see the sewing hook moving under the bobbin case.

If not, take it to a sewing repair person and it should cost somewhere around $100 to repair.

Singer zig-zag 437

loosen the screw on the larger of the two feed gears (not bevel gears). Retigten so that the feed teeth start to rise right when the needle starts to rise and fall right when the needle starts to go into the fabric. Make the setting the same. i.e. when the feed teeth start to rise, how high is the needle (2mm, 3mm, etc.)? set the feed timing so the teeth rise and fall with the needle at the same height going in and coming out, this assures that the fabric only feeds when the needle is out of the fabric.
