SOURCE: frig temp not stable
Chances are your control dial is bad, your thermostat has gone bad or your compressor has freezen over. As bad as it may seem to trouble shoot this, unplug your frig., to "defrost" then plug back in. If this does not solve the problem, you may need to replace the thermostat or control dial.

The problem is usually a defective defrost control or defrost system, in some case the temp control may be faulty. The defrost system causing the problem is far more common.
If this model has a temperature sensor for the freezer, check also the sensor.
About the problem:
If the unit is cooling down regularly and then going off after about 8 hours, then it is the defrost timer. The part must be replaced.
If there is ice on top of the evaporator coil, then the problem is still defrost system. Defrost timer, defrost thermostat, heater element and fan must be tested.
If the unit is not responding, and the temperature is changing erratically, or the fridge is not working at all, then the problem can also be the temperature control. This basically means that the electronic control board located in control assembly (behind the panel where you set the temperature) is defective. The part is difficult to test.
Start disconnecting power overnight. This will allow full defrost and will also reset the electronic control. If the next day the fridge and freezer sections are working, then the problem is the defrost system (AKA evap). The problem will restart in one or more days, when the defrost system failure starts putting the condenser under stress.
Here below a short article I wrote some time ago. It shows how to do the repair on a Kenmore fridge. Part location and some part name will be differently, but it is useful to understand how repair is done (it explains how to test parts): When the fridge is not cooling ...
