My toshiba a70 turns off after just a few minutes on.

make sure that you do not have the airflow areas blocked, put the machine on a hard flat surface, its more than likely overheating, if you are using a hard surface then make sure there is no dirt inside the fan area, use a high pressure air system to blow out the areas

The display screen is blocked. The lens is open. Can see outline of blockage

If Canon A70 camera shows previously taken/ stored pictures properly in playback mode and does not show live view in LCD in camera mode to take fresh pictures then it is ccd imager chip failure problem and ccd imager chip will be replaced.
Canon offers free of cost repair for A70 for ccd imager failure problem. Click Canon CCD Imager Advisory for details.

I have a couple broken pins in the compact flash connector internal to the camera. Can I order a replacement socket and attempt repair myself?

It can be done, but it's not easy and requires patience and a good invetory of parts and screws. Replacement card reader can be salvaged from a broken ebay camera (A75 and A85 readers are interchangeable). Here's a disassembly of a very similar A70:

Now are the pins actually broken or just bent. If just bent, you can actually and easily unbend them, but it requires patience:

Remove battery door of Canon A630

This is an old A70, but the way it's done is very similar as I don't think this has changed much over the years. It's a pin design that you have to push out with a stiff unbent paperclip. You push in on the side with the smaller hole. To access the pin you'll need to remove the front and back case covers. See the following:

My Canon PowerShot A70 Digital wont take pictures!

There are several possible possible things might cause this error. The first obvious is the card has gone bad. Try a different memory card to verify.

Second thing is to inspect the pins in the card slot. Look for bent or missing pins. If you find a bent pin, don't fret as it's relatively easy to fix:

- Remove batteries and card. Use a small/skinny jeweler's flat screwdriver to bend the pin back as close as possible. Take your time and use as much patience as you can muster (take a breather in between if needed).

- It doesn't have to be perfect, just as close as you can get it. When it's there, take your flash card and "SLOWLY" insert it. The card itself should fine-align the pin. Remove the card, and verify that the pin is still straightened. If so, reinsert the card and try it out.

If it's neither of the above, the next thing to try is replacing the camera's "CR 1220" clock battery. Its compartment is located under the rubber A/V cable mat on the left side of the camera. You can buy this inexpensive battery at most department or drug stores. Just open the door by prying it open with a pin or small screwdriver, take out the old battery, and put in the new.

Cannon A70 lens stuck in middle causing it to keep powering off

The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty they're worth a try:

A70 Flash does not work

You can buy a used A70 with everything working for about $50, and it'll almost definitely cost you more than that to fix the flash. If the reconditioned Canon they're offering you is around that price, and they'll give you a warranty, and you love the A70 too much to upgrade, I'd say take them up on it. I love my A70 too, but I recently got an A540 for my wife and now I usually use it also (when she lets me). The lighter weight (2 AA batts instead of 4) and the larger LCD monitor screen really make a difference.
