SOURCE: In need of welt foot for rex 26-188 sewing

Well I'm not sure if this is a solution but, most walking foot machines are either like the Juki 562 or 3 and the Singer 111, 211  or newer models. REX's are particularly original, they should be using a very similar welting foot. Many industrial sewing stores in LA have them.. Kyle

SOURCE: The needle thread on my bernina minimatic keeps breaking.

There is special thread for denim/jeans. It usually comes in shades of brown. It's a little heavier and might help with the breakage. You might also want to try a little less tension. I assume you already have a Schmetz denim needle?

Can i sew denim with the ww200 mighty mender.

Probably not recommended for your machine. Denim is a difficult fabric even for some standard sewing machines. If you do attempt to stitch denim, it might be best to avoid sewing more than one layer of denim. Definitely, denim seams could be detrimental to your machine.

Unless it's a commercial machine - No Way. Plus a normal garment needle will break.

Can you sew leather or vinyl on Husqvarna 415? If so, what tension, needle and foot should I use?

Ok. Depending on the thickness... garment weight leathers can be sewn with a domestic machine... Most often an even feed foot (the home version of a walking foot) is needed. You will likely need a larger leather needle and somewhat longer stitches than you would normally sew.

As for stitches looking messy on the back that is a top tension problem... you'll need to tighten the tension until that goes away. AFTER you have made sure you have your machine threaded correctly with the presser foot in the up position.

I have been sewing denim, and the top thread keeps breaking at the needle. What adjustments do I need to make. It also bunches from the bobbin.

Are you trying to use a heavy thread like buttonhole twist through the needle like the yellow thread on store bought jeans? Most domestic machines will not cope with this heavy thread and it will be too large for the eye of the needle too.

If you are using regular weight 50 polyester thread and its breaking then it could be because the top tension is too tight. Just loosen off 1/2 a number on top tension dial and see if this helps.

If possible, buy a pack of jeans needles size 100 too, these are blue coated with teflon I think, and makes it easier to slip through denim which is a very dense fabric.

Hemming denim jeans is probably one of the toughest jobs for a domestic sewing machine so if you are trying to do this, its a good idea to take it slowly and use a "humpjumper" which helps to maneouvre over the thick side seams.

However, even with all the above, many machines won't sew more than one layer of heavy dense weave denim.

Sewing a patch...what type of needle do I use

Always pick the needle type and size according to the fabric that you are sewing. I'm assuming if you are "patching" you might be using an iron on patch product on the underside of the garment and you should try to use a similar weight to the garment's fabric weight to do this.

If you are patching denim for example, you'd use a "denim" needle (teflon blue coating to slide through the fibres better) if you can, probably size 90 or 100. If you don't have a denim needle then just a regular 90 or 100 needle will suffice.

If sewing knits, use a ballpoint needle. For leather and vinyl use a Leather needle, these have a different shaped tip to piece the leather.

Try this link for more good general info on needles you might want to print out the section on sewing machine needle sizes and pin up in your sewing room.

My sewing needle selection is over 25 different needle packs and I probably buy 4-6 packs a year to ensure I've got the right size on hand. Change your needle for every new project - a needle stays sharp for about 4-6 sewing hours then should be replaced. If you are hearing squeaking or popping noises, your needle is blunt, chuck it.

In the words of my sewing mentor Wendy "Dont spoil the ship for a ha'pworth of tar" .

The bobbin and needle won't move when i press the foot pedal, do i have something threaded wrong?

I own a signer simple and it is a great little machine but if not adjusted just so it will act up like this.

The three things that caused this were:

#1 tension on upper thread and bobbin casing were uneven.
#2 Thread was catching on bobbin casing (solution, generously oil the face of the casing where the latch to remove the bobbin is located.
#3 The material was too thick (denim, leather) or I was sewing through too many layers of fabric.

As a general rule of thumb with this machine I never sew through more than 4 or 5 layers. This is a great machine for quick fixes and mending, but if using for apparel and complex items it can be a bit finicky. I default to a sturdier machine in these instances.

The WEDGE POINT NEEDLE, which is designed for leather and vinyl, easily pierces these fabrics to make a hole that will close back upon itself. This eliminates unattractive holes in the garment, and also reduces the risk of the stitches tearing the fabric. The wedge point needle comes in sizes 11 to 18. The size 11 needle is designed for soft pliable leathers, while size 18 is designed for heavy or multiple layers of leather or vinyl.

Question==>JUKI dnu 1541 or ddl 8300n

Might I be so bold as to disagree with Allmakes.
Why would a manufacturer build different models of industrial. They are designed for differnt jobs. The 8300 is a high speed garment machine, the 1541 is a compund feed upholstery machine. The motor is the same HP and does not affect the ability to sew heavy. The garment machine will sew garment weight leather just fine but you will have problems getting the fabric to feed properly particularly over seams. The other issure you may find with a garment machine is it's ability to handle heavier threads. I suggest that the 1541 would be a better choice for making bags and purses.
