Question about Air Vent INC. 54508 36" Whole House Fan

1 Answer

Why does my airvent whole house fan stop working intermittently?

The fan worked fine until it was about 3 years old, but now it works but stops working without warning; I turn it off, and it starts working again when I turn it on after some time has elapsed. What should I do?

Thanks for the capacitor info. I called AirVent (the manufacturer) and they are sending me a new motor (They said the problem was probably worn bearings.). I assume the "capacitor" is in the motor assembly. Is it?ynot

good for them to replace the motor but the capacitor is a separate device from the motor, just observe after replacing the motor .

If fan was able to run normally after a while, you may have problem with the motor starting capacitor, this gives the fan the needed kick to spin , when your fan stops working this may mean that the capacitor have already over heated, turning it off for a while will give it chance to cool off then start up again, have the capacitor checked and replaced immediately.

Ada, I think you have already diagnosed the problem. It's the Leviton timer. For whatever reason, it can not handle the fan motor without over heating. The best indicator, was the melted hot wire. Perhaps the switch was defective from the start. I suspect the timer was rated for a ceiling fan and not a whole house fan.

Hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Just quit. Worked fine one day. Next day went to turn it on and nothing happened. Fan is little over a year old.

Control switch, circuit breaker, or loose wire are main suspect.
Rarely does a motor just stop working.

Check circuit breaker.
Open control switch and test for power and check for loose connections.
Install ordinary on-off switch and see if function resumes.
Check wire connections at fan.

Ceiling fan with light and remote stopped working

It's most likely the receiver for the remote (transmitter) -- it's located under the cover at the top of the fan -- will need replacing.

Air Handler Blower Unit Humming

More then likely it's the transformer. It may be getting weak. I've seen them hum/vibrate almost new and last for years. It's more an annoyance than anything.
