Call a reputable co. get it tuned up most have maintenance programs, should be checked yearly.you will be time and money ahead the out side unit needs to be cleaned to. and what you spend on cleaning the unit you would have spent trying to cool a house with a dirty unit that has very low performance. good luck Tom.

My window air conditioner is not cooling at all, even though the fan works and I hear the motor humming.

Here's a pretty simple test - take off the cover if possible, remove the air filter - I know some it's trickier on some and they have a filter that slides in from the side versus a hinged cover, etc. you can pull off or down - but there are metal fins behind that filter. Turn the A/C unit on and try and feel those fins. If they are getting cold and your fan is on - it should be drawing hot air in right there, cooling it down and cool air should come out of the vent. If you turn the A/C on and feel those fins - hear the humming - but they are not getting cold - you have a bigger issue. Basically, your compressor isn't sending refrigerant through the coils and there's nothing to cool the air down with. *Could be other components - but that's a pretty basic test just to check functionality. If it's getting cold - but you're not blowing cold air - those fins could just be clogged with dust, etc. You have to be careful cleaning those as they bend easily. They sell special cleaner for them (you'll want to use it outside - usually an acid based cleaner) and a device that looks like a comb to get in between the fins to straighten if they get bent. Word to the wise - those fins being straight and clean allow the air flow to come through unrestricted - definitely less is more on the cleaning side; you'll want to be very careful. Emerson air conditioner filter cover

if you want to clean the coil on it, you need to get a wire brush and gently brush the dust off. be very careful not to bend the metal fins shut. you could ruin the unit if you do so

Why is air conditioner freezing up

Hi Krystal. Not sure how old your AC is. But mine is 1988 Class C. My roof mount started today freezing up After being on only 1/2 hour or less.I took the cover off AC on roof and seen the cooling coil half full of ice building up. When It get fully packed with ice the inside air cannot pass thru coil to fan to recycle the cooled air back down inside RV.. I checked out this site.Fixya.It seems my AC may be blocked with dust in the cooling coil. So I cleaned it out with compressed air. You can buy a can of it in spray form at Wal-Mart.$5..Also FixYa suggested to change the air filters after you clean the coils. Take off cover in inside on ceiling and put new filters. Peferable ones that are able to breathe thru easly. Mine was pluged with dog dander and a bit of dog hair.. I may have to put my dog..in a bag...No I can't do that... But today and yesteday it was very hot and ******* the AC.. But I did attach a small fan under my AC to push more hot up into coils.. It did make a diference The coils started to thaw and drip water on roof.. But I still have to check freon pressure...I'm attaching a photo of my small fan It is only 5"across...Hoped that helped a little.......John, Cornwall, Ontario

Frgidaire dehumidifyer runs but coils do not get cold

the condenser is probably clogged with dust thus restricting the air flow required to cool it down. if it has a filter on the front, take it out and clean it. if it does not, try to remove the front cover and, using a stiff bristled brush and simple green, clean the fins on the condenser then hose it down. if there, then, is no air flow, check the fan. replace if necessary.

Evaporator coils are freezing up. I took off the side cover and it is a solid sheet of ice covering 90% of the coils.

Hello, ice will form for one of two raesons, either low airflow or a low refrigerant charge. Start by checking the filter to make sure it is clean, then check the blower wheel and make sure it is clean. If the unit is clean then the unitnis low on refrigerant and will require a hvac tech to come out and recharge the unit.

I have a 5th whell RV Couger 2006 had 1 AC unit replaced already now two years later it only pumps slightly cooler air but has condinsation streaming off the roof. An hour and a half later the interior is...

Yes it is a sealed unit, and there are some refrigeration guys who can solder on valves and recharge, but make sure you get a quote first, as some charge as much as a new unit. That said, I'd be looking at evaporator coils/fins as well as condenser coils and fins for dirt and debris and give them a real good cleaning. I'm going to assume this is a ducted ceiling, so Make sure your getting flow through all those ducts, and check for how cool it is. Does it feel like cooler air coming out the ducts? Rule of thumb is 20 F difference between ambient and discharge should be normal. All that condensation tells me it's trying to cool but you may have a problem elsewhere, like plugged fins, or faulty ducting. If the flow coming out of ceiling ducts is not good and cool, try removing the ceiling assy and see if the discharge side is cool there, and check that the ducts in to the ceiling have no obstructions as well and are properly aligned.Let me know what you find. Make sure return air filter is clean as well and get a flashlight and look way up in the return area, at the fins for dust collected on fins etc. If you remove outside cover on roof, turn off breaker, and you can use a hose to spray down and a nylon brush to clean fins and coils at condenser. Watch for bees, or wasps when you remove that cover on the roof.

I would try to clean the coils with a paint brush, then i would go to freds walmrt kmart or any other store that sells 30 day filters and buy some. Take it to my aunts house, cut the filter to fit in front of the coils and behind the cover.

My cooling coil ices up after running for a while , also ice develops on the condensor unit line.

Sounds like you have restricted air flow through the evaporator, which turns it into a mini-freezer. If the filter is clean and in good shape, I would check the evaporator fins on the air inlet side for dust clogged fins. You can brush them with a fin comb to clean them.

A/c turns on for 10 minutes

If it was start up capacitors, it wouldn't start initially every time. Do me/you, a favor, and remove your filter inside (return air) , and if it's a ducted system, remove entire plastic cover inside. Take a flashlight & look way up where filter covers in hole & take a good look at cooling fins on evaporator (front of AC). Look for restrictions such as dust etc. That dust will turn just like mud on there due to condensation mixing with dust, and block off flow which could cause unit to freeze up & compressor to kick out. If your real ambitious, and find lots of dust there, taking cover off roof unit would be next, and check same there at back end (condenser) coils & cooling fins.Get back to me after inspection from inside. Could still be electrical but lets check that it has proper maintenance & best chance to work properly by doing this first.

Problem with hussmann chest freezer

If the freezer is not located in an area where grease vapors are present the unit can be cleaned off using a vacuum cleaner. Then use a flash light to look through the coils. If you see dust embedded deep inside use a small air compressor to blow out the dust. Dirty condenser coils raise the pressures and temperatures in the system. Cleaning the coils and scheduling them to be clean at quarterly intervals should keep it functioning for a long time. Operating with a restricted condenser takes its tole on the compressor life span.
