Intermittent convergence (IC?) problem

I acquired a RPTV with a similar problem to many listed here--the red is way out of convergence, causing a shadow usually about 1 or 2 inched to the right. The red also seems to jump around sometimes.

Based on what I've read, it may require new ICs, but the strange thing is that it works perfectly sometimes. Sometimes, I can watch it for hours without a problem. Other times, it is messed up from the start or will go bad after a few minutes. I haven't seen others list their issues as intermittent. Is it still likely an issue with an IC?

It was the ICs. I sent the board off to be repaired by PTS corp. It was worth the $85 to avoid me having to solder (and that included shipping and the ICs). Pic looks great now. Thanks for the help!

What are IC's and how do I find and install them?

  • dcestey Nov 30, 2008

I have the same problem with my 65 inch Sony 65WV700. If it is intermittent like yours, am I understanding correctly that it is a much easier fix than if it is completely out. I am an electronics technician so I have no problem with doing a little bit of soldering work. But I don't know where to find these parts in the TV so that I can look at them and see if there is a visible problem. Does anyone have any sort of picture or a good description of where I could find them?

Can be bad solder connections on IC pins, but intermittent
conditions can damage IC's, so we usually replace because
the labor to get the board out is the same ..........Three to five
years on a pair of convergence IC's is normal.........T.

Colored lines at top and bottom when tv comes on and seeing double vision in different colors at all times

If your tv is not a DLP the problem is in the convergence, try to adjust it using your original remote control go to the setting menu then to the convergence section. Adjust the red and blue convergence. you should move the red and the blue in up, down and left, right if this color does not move far enough your convergence IC is already defective. Replacing this convergence IC will solve the problem. In locating this convergence IC you should remove the back cover of your unit but be sure to unplug it before doing this. This convergence IC is attached to a large aluminum plate, it is the heat sink, and it has a marking of stk- ### followed by numbers. You can try to pull it out using a soldering iron and soldering pump but be careful you may damage the board and cause much problem to your unit. Or you can contact a technician to do it for you and save you from stress good day and best regards.

Cannot adjust convergence on Mitsubishi RPTV

as long as there is no bowing in the picture and the color does not want to move then there is probably just a bad resistor on the convergence IC that controls the color alignment , thus the resistors would have to be tested to find the low valued resistor on the IC

Sony KP-61XBR200 Convergence problem

STK392-020 ICs are the convergence ICs for your model, you may also want to check the 3.5 amp pico fuses and the 4.7 ohm 1/2 watt resistors as well.

Convergence IC's replaced, still won't converge

I had a similar problem. Purchased a rptv second hand. Got it home convergence was off (was OK prior to moving it). Turns out it was a dry solder joint. Check underneath the conv pcb.

50h82 red convergence ic replacement

The quick answer is part number 23135090 from tritronicsinc.com or any nearby supplier. However, if the problem is intermittent (or even if it's not), you should be sure to check the solder connections along each end of the black or brown jumper wires near the IC's as they have caused problems in the past. Also, if the symptom you have is with the Red Convergence grid bowed at the top of screen, check Q783 p/n 23205037 as well. Good Luck and have Fun!

Toshiba model 61HX70 convergence issue

It is a good possibility you damaged something on that PCB that had the IC's, I like to use an upgraded chip the STK394-160e that is designed for HD signal stresses. I dont know why they ordered the convergence board but I suspect it would have been ok, there are also 2 jumpers that need soldering JW10 and JW50 that supply power to the chips and they REQUIRE resoldering or it will fail again. Might try reseating the RED CRT board, check for cables that you may have unhooked to see if they are not seated in their sockets properly, double check every wire you unhooked, Make sure you used a Silicone Heatsink Compound on to the back of the IC's. I dont know what all you unhooked, but check the wires going between the CRT Boards. Check for cracks in the boards to make sure they werent flexed to much. Good Luck.
