Why does my deck belt come off?

Mower keeps throwing deck belt off. I have replaced the belt and made sure that it was put on correctly. I have had this problem since we bought the mower in 2011. Always placed the blame on a stick throwing it off but have never actually seen a stick in the area to prove me right. As of lately, (with a brand new belt) it throws it off as soon as the PTO is turned on. Please help, this is getting really irritating, and yard is beginning to look like a snake pit :(

Make sure i
the pulley is on streight, and not crooked. Check the pulley pin to make sure its not slipping. If its an Craftsman, take it back and get a new one. All their stuff is lifetime.

SOURCE: when I engage the mower blades,It makes a loud

It sounds a lot like the balancer is loose. You can most likely fix this yourself, here's how: pull the spark plug wire off the plug, tilt the lawnmower up to expose the blade, rock the blade to see if it is loose on the shaft, if it is all you have to do is tighten the bolt so the blade and the balancer are flush to the shaft. That should fix your noise and uneven cut problem. If that doesn't fix it, let me know here, ok? Cheers!

Check for a bent shaft on the pully, or play in the shaft due to worn bearings on the shaft, The belt coming off is due to a misalignment of the pully with the belt.

Belt is to long, is there a deck adjustment?

Jim, Double check to make sure you have correct belt for the deck and are installing it in the correct configuration as per manual or drawing on deck. Very few lawn tractors have deck belt adjustment, most do not, most deck belts have a spring loaded tensioner to take up the slack.
This could be some of your problem, the tensioner/idler pulley sometimes seize up and must be lubed up till they move freely, or your belt could be loose. Look in your manual or try google searching your make, model #, deck belt adjustment.

Craftsman LT2000 lawn tractor keeps throwing deck drive belt

Keep in mind that the mower deck gets to be raised and lowered into the desired mowing height, with no change to drive pulley (at motor) height. This requires a belt long enough to allow the furthest reach (usually with deck dropped to lowest setting) and a spring loaded tensioner pulley, to take up the slack (and keep the belt tight) as the deck is raised. There may also be a belt guide or two incorporated to help keep the belt from jumping ship in the process. Sometimes these are just a heavy gauge steel wire loop that attaches near the pulley to keep the belt from jumping if it gets slack. Possibly you didn't thread the belt through or under it properly, or have missed the tensioner pulley.

It could also be the tensioner spring is broke or has fallen off or become too weak. Have someone move the deck up and down (with motor off, and belt installed) while you watch to see there is any obstruction in path. Also look for the belt becoming loose at a certain point. Some tensioners have the spring built in to the pulley and you can't really see them. They have to be pre-loaded, by rocking the pulley spindle assembly against the spring force while you slip the belt over it. Sometimes the belt looks fine and not loose in static (not moving) condition, but when the blades are spinning fast and the throttle is closed with no load (no thick grass being cut) the blades momentum will cause a belt sag that is supposed to be taken care of by the tensioner. It can get pretty grimy down there, also very dry, dusty and caked with cement like old clippings. Check the manual and find out where your tensioner is, then check it to make sure that it can move freely and it isn't locked tight by debris or rust. Also good to check if there has been an update to your mower. Sometimes these problems cause a manufacter to offer a better spring, or change pulley sizes to correct a common problem.

Why does my mower deck belt on john deere 316 keeps breaking

There are a few causes for this and its not just this brand or model. First check that belt is installed correctly, check the part that keeps the belt on the belt rollers the belt should be between the garde and belt wheel, check for shine spots where belt is rubbing, Some times the mower deck is not set even or too low it can put the belt at too much of an angel causing the top of roller to cut it. So check the deck level there are adjustment devices on the mower to adjust, check for shine spots and for correct belt installment, and check roller wheel top for cuts or sharp spots, and check belt tension to see if it is to tight or too lose, also check that rollers spin free and there is not one stuck that could be heating the belt up too much, And last but not least make sure you are using the proper belt that is made for a mower fan belts don't last very long on a mower.

If all the parts are correct then you need to check the belt routing diagram. Sometimes you can find it on the mower deck and in the owners manual. Look carefully at the spring locations on the deck to be sure there correct. George

Every time I lower my mower board my mower stops or slows down. I just replaced the mandrel and also the belt. When my mower board is raised up all the way the mower works good.

Lower the deck without it running and see if anything is making contact with the mower belt that shouldn't be. Sure sounds to me like you have the belt in a bind when you lower the deck, possibly by not routing the belt in the correct position when you replaced the belt.

Blades rotate on tractor when new belt was put on

be sure you have the correct belt for that mower?
Even though your deck is raised to disengage the
belt it may need to go up a small amount more, try pulling back on the deck raise handle to see if that helps, and find a way to keep it at that higher point if that worked or run the new belt for awhile and see if that makes a difference.
Check the belt guards to see if they are close to the belt as possible while engaged, but not hitting the belt
and when disengaged guards should be hitting the belt somewhat to help keep it from turning.
and yes be sure you have good belt brake pads and know they have good tension and hitting in the proper place

The belt from the riding lawn mower doesn't want to stay on and we think it is the pully

usually its one of two things, alignment, or the pully itself, inspect the pully real close, the belt must fit inside the groove, somtimes these pullys collapse due to wear, the other is alignment, make sure the deck blade pulleys and the motor pulley are all at the same hieght, if there not ligned up the belt will keep flying off, also make sure you are putting the belt on right the diagram for mounting the belt is on the deck, if its not put on correctly the belt will keep flying off- hope that helps

I have a Craftsman 20 HP 42" Mower. I replaced an idler pulley and drive belt on the mower deck. I got the deck reattached to the mower but now the mower blades spin even when not engaged. How can I fix...

Did you obtain the correct replacement belt AND pulley. Double check your part numbers against the parts list for your machine. If you verify that they are correct, double check the belt routing, make sure it didn't get on the wrong side of a belt guide and is in the correct configuration. Look at your idler pulley and make sure the release spring is doing its job pulling it back from the applied position. Make sure that the arm for the pulley moves freely where it is bolted to the deck, it could be bound up with rust or debris. You should have a lot of slack in the belt when it is in the released position. If it does not then either it is the wrong part or improper installation
