Laptop pointer erratic

There is a setting in your Control Panel/Mouse, which is a check box to enable it to hide the mouse pointer when not in use. Disable that and see if it helps.

Windows 8.1?

Not sure what you mean but a possible problem with erratic mice is the mouse pad. A coloured pad sometimes reflests the light in an erratic fashion that causes the pointer to do unexpected things. Try it without a pad or one with no patterns.

Will trackball model 64215 work on Windows 7?

The last operating system that allows a Kensington Expert Mouse 5.0 Model 64215 to work properly is Windows XP. Kensington refuses to update their MouseWorks software in order to make it compatible with Windows Vista or 7. The mouse WILL work, but only with basic functionality, i.e., no programmable buttons, and the pointer moves crazy slow...

Kensington PilotMouse 72129 Erratic movement across the screen, even with reset and new batteries

Microsoft has a knowledge base article on erratic mouse pointer movement that may help. As you can see in this article, there is more to it than uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse driver. Microsoft Support on Mouse Problems.
As I've said, it's possible that something has corrupted your mouse driver. You can either 1) re-install the driver, or 2) roll back the driver. Either one of these may help. To roll back your driver in Windows XP, go to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Mouse. Click on the "hardware" tab. Select the appropriate pointing device, and click "properties." Click the driver tab, then select "roll back driver."
Under the "hardware" tab, there may be more than one mouse. If this is the case, select the one that is not used, follow the settings above, and then select "uninstall." Or, you can go into Control Panel --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager, and remove the device under "Mice and other pointing devices

POINTER FREEZES THEM MOVES THEN FREEZES DRIVING ME NUTS. THANKS

When this behavior is observed when using a Logitech product withinWindows® XP, it may be caused by a feature within Windows called"enhanced pointer precision". This feature may conflict with Logitech's software, causing the erratic movement. Enhanced pointerprecision became available in Service Pack 2 and therefore is notapplicable in any version of Windows® XP without Service Pack 2installed. For more information on enhanced pointer precision, please click HERE. If this link does not work, then you should go to Microsoft and search for Knowledge Base article 895550.

Please see these articles from the Logitech database for possible troubleshooting tips as well:
