Question about Consew Sewing Machines

Open Question

Consew 29bl Hi. I have a consew 29BL and the hand wheel will not engage. I've made sure the knob for bobbin winding is popped in place, and still you can just spin it and it does nothing. I would appreciate any help you may have. JF

SOURCE: Stop Motion Knob

Dear Jim,
I'm sure you have a pair of Channel lock pliers around.Place a fairly thick piece of fabric around the inner knob to keep from scratching it. Grasp it with the pliers while holding the handwheel and turn it to the left. IF you can't hold the wheel to keep it from slipping, place a screwdriver or something else under the needle set screw area, turn the wheel until the set screw is resting against the set screw and then turn the inner knob with the pliers.

SOURCE: My elna sewing machine bobbin

If the fly wheel is going around then the clutch isn't disengaged to wind the bobbin, you need to pull out the flywheel on your model to disengage the clutch for bobbin winding.

tally_girl_59.jpg
Take thread from thread spool across to bobbin winder thread guide, then back to bobbin and thread the tail through the hole on top of the bobbin. Place bobbin onto spindle on top of machine and then push it against the stop to engage the bobbin winding motor. HOld the thread tail up and start winding slowly until the bobbin core has been covered including the starting point. Stop and trim off the thread tail with scissors. COntinue winding bobbin and give the thread a nudge if needed to wind evening top middle and bottom of the bobbin. A good smooth wind is important. Also don't wind at full speed and keep an eye on the thread reel that the thread is coming off, you don't want it bouncing around as this will **** the thread and stretch then relax it affecting your bobbin wind.

Obviously if you know this and the bobbin winding mechanisim is just not working, then it will need a service/replacement by an Elna repair person.

SOURCE: Hand wheel won't spin?

Something is binding up inside. Clean and check under the presser foot and bobbin area. Really examine under there... look for threads wrapped around and in between moving parts. Also check in the slot for the take up lever... sometimes threads get balled up inside there can cause problems.

could also be a bent upper arm inside the machine (lets hope not) Get professional help if cleaning doesn't free it up.

SOURCE: singer 974 MY NEEDLE WOULDN'T MOVE WHEN I TURN THE HAND WHEEL AND MY HAND WHEEL WOOBLES. HOW CAN I FIX IT?

slacken the small stop screw and remove the centre free motion knob. the balance wheel should now be free to turn independent of the shaft. you will have exposed the friction washer. clean all surfaces and relocate the washer with the two locating lugs facing outwards into the two slots in the shaft and refit the knob and screw. if the screw bottoms on the friction washer remove knob and turn the friction through 180 degrees and try it again

The foot pedal is not moving the machine but still makes a noise

A: You said, "The your foot pedal is not moving the machine, but still makes a noise". . . . I'd suggest checking if the sewing machine has a disengaged or broken drive belt, gear or linkage; if not the problem, may just be that the Hand-Wheel clutch mechanism (on the left center of the Hand Wheel) is in the Bobbin-Winding position. If so, it allows the machine to cycle, operating the Bobbin-Winder without the needle moving up or down. Older Brother machines, like many other brands, used a large flat shiny Screw Knob in the center of the Hand Wheel to engage or disengage the Bobbin-Winding feature, newer models use a plastic teeter-totter switch located in the same place, to do the same thing. Keep tinkering, you'll will resolve it.

Why the bobbin winder does not turn when engaged?

Is the hand wheel pulled out ? Usually to get a bobbin to wind, you have to disengage the clutch.. this is usually done by pulling either the entire hand wheel or a knob in the middle of it out. This stops the needle going up/down.

I don't have this exact machine, but have had one similar to it. I looked at a pic of the machine and see two small things sticking up on the top at the far right hand side. Are they part of the bobbin winder ?

If yes, you may have to push the part with the empty bobbin mounted on it, sideways, to engage the winding mechanism.

Hope this is of help.

Singer 362 bobbin

It appears from the manual (see pages 9-10, which are on 11-12 of the pdf version) that it is necessary to disengage the hand wheel (loosen the center knob) with the bobbin winding lever all the way to the left, before putting the bobbin on the winder spindle. Put the bobbin on the spindle, then set the winding lever to the right position to engage the spindle drive. Do not tighten the hand wheel knob until after the bobbin is wound and the lever is moved back the left to permit bobbin removal.

If you are following these directions exactly, or you can't get the hand wheel knob loose, you have a mechanical problem to solve. You may need a stronger hand to loosen the knob, or something in the bobbin winder is bent, out of adjustment, or jammed with foreign material. If you are mechanically inclined, you may want to remove the top cover of the machine for inspection.

Needle does not move when I try to sew.

On these old singers, there is a locking washer that controls the tighten and release mechanism. If it is not in the proper place your efforts to tighten and loosen to engage the sewing functions do nothing.

Kenmore sewing machine Model 1602: I was filling a bobbin and when I went back to sewing - the needle won't go up and down. Motor runs when I press on the footpad. It is as if the clutch is stuck as well...

Sound like you need to take it out of bobbin winder mode. Suggest looking for a way to engage the clutch. Turn the center knob on hand wheel and or move the bobbin winding post back to postion.

The center hand wheel should move about 1/3 turn towards you to look it back into place.

How do i add thread to the bobbin? i have wound it and placed on the knob, and pulled out the wheel but nothing is happening..

when you place the bobbin on the bobbin winder on top of your machine, you then push the lever closest to it into the bobbin until it clicks. most newer machines will automatically quit using the needle when you are winding a bobbin if its an older machine there may be a push button on the wheel or you may have to loosen the knob inside the wheel to keep the needle from operating , you then use the foot pedal to wind just as you would to sew. Bobbin will automatically pop when full, be sure to redo anything that you had to undo to wind bobbin.

Make sure you either tighten the knob or push in the wheel on the right end of the machine, at the hand feed wheel.

7. Pass thread end, from inside, through small hole in rim of bobbin.
8. Holding thread end, step on speed controller to run machine until desired amount of thread is wound. (Winding stops automatically once bobbin is full.)
9. Cut thread; push bobbin to the left and remove it from bobbin winder pin.
10. Trim thread end from top of bobbin.
11. Press the bobbin winding indent on hand wheel to its original position. If necessary, turn hand wheel to engage needle movement.
