Most newer machines have it mounted in the control panel along with the cold control and light.

Defrost is stuck in one all time it not cooling or freezing

A DEFROST TIMER is a cycling device, it times the frequency and duration that the defrost heater coils melt the ice that builds up around the evaporator coils. If ice is allowed to build up, air will not be able to freely flow past them - resulting in reduced efficiency and sometimes a drastic warming of the cooling unit.

zjlimited_1583.jpg

Most of the time, the defrost timer is in the cooling mode, allowing the compressor to activate when the thermostat signals it to. The remaining part of the cycle (usually less than 30 minutes)the timer is in defrost mode. In this mode, it signals the defrost heaters to melt the ice build up on the coils. This defrost action is limited by the defrost thermostat. If your DETROST TIMER go to bad, one symptom would be if your refrigerator is not cooling. Although there are many causes of this symptom, A stuck defrost timer can be one of them. The timer can get stuck in cooling (compressor activated) or defrost mode (defrost heaters activated) for usually two reasons:
- The timer motor can fail for one.
- The gears can also become locked up.

No matter what the reason is or which mode the defrost timer gets stuck in, the refrigerator can stop cooling. When the refrigerator is stuck in defrost mode, the compressor no longer comes on to cool the unit. If the timer gets stuck in cooling mode, the evaporator coils never get a chance to defrost, causing ice build-up to the point where there is a complete blockage of airflow past the coils.

The defrost timer can also cause the refrigerator to stop cooling due to failure of the internal switch which activates either the compressor or heater coils. Finally, when doing any repair on a refrigerator, check the condenser coils for dust buildup and clean accordingly.

Good luck.

Defrost system not working

Hello,

A mechanical defrost timer controls the defrost cycle of the freezer. In older models, the timer runs continuously and roughly every six hours, cuts power to the cooling system and sends power to the defrost heater. In newer models the timer advances only while the compressor or defrost cycle is running - an improvement for efficiency. As the timer continues to advance, power to the heating element is cut and power is restored to the cooling system. If the timer does not advance, the appliance will be stuck either in defrost or refrigerate mode, resulting in, respectively, no cooling or frost build-up.

The defrost timer is usually found behind the front grill "toe kick" of the refrigerator. It may also be found behind a cover plate inside the refrigerator or freezer, in the temperature control console, or behind the refrigerator near the compressor. To test whether the defrost timer is simply failing to advance, locate the advance screw and turn it clockwise until you hear it click. This advances it to the next mode. If it was cooling before, it is now in defrost mode. Simply wait about 35 minutes and check whether it has left defrost mode and has resumed cooling (listen for the compressor). If it does not advance, the timer motor is probably bad and the entire timer needs to be replaced. If it advances as it should, then you can follow the steps below to test the switch electrically.
The timer is usually held in place with one or more screws. Remove the screws and gently pull the timer out far enough to disconnect the wiring connector. The connector can be removed by firmly pulling and rocking it left and right. It is not necessary to note the position of the wires because the connector plug is keyed so that it can be replaced in only one way.

Take care.

The refrigerator quits cooling. If I unplug it and let it sit for a while then plug it back in, it start cooling again. I think the defrost timer may be malfunctioning.

yes, this is a defrost timer failure, mine went out recently, the best way to check is when it stops cooling to look in the freezer were the condenser is if it is frosted then the defrost timer is bad.
PartsDirect.com (sears supplier) might have it.

Timer will not advance into defrost. Replaced timer 3 times.

If you have recently replaced the timer with a new one it's likely you need to make a wiring modification to the timer for your machine.

The fridge part of my fridge freezer appears to have stopped working

Look to the freezer for your problem. Frost free refrigerators are cooled by air from the freezer compartment. If the freezer cooling coil freezes up air flow to the refrigerator is lost. Look for signs of frost on back wall of the freezer section.

Located the defrost timer, turn the clutch head screw clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. The system will then be in the defrost mode. During the 18-22 minutes of the defrost cycle heaters are energized and defrost should take place. If defrost happens and the timer does not restart into the cooling mode, rotate the screw one more time SLOWLY to the second click and the system will restart in the cooling mode. Replace the timer in this case.

If the timer restarts the cooling after the defrost period and defrost does not happen your problem is in the defrost heaters or defrost thermostat. They are located inside the back wall of the freezer on the cooling coil.

I have side by side refig model GSS25JFMCWW.I have to manually defrost by shutting off refrig. This model has defrost cycle, what would cause this cycle not to work?

Defective defrost timer, heaters, or defrost thermostat. Locate the defrost timer, rotate the dial (clutch head screw) clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one click. That puts the timer in defrost. Wait 25-30 minutes and the defrost should happen. Normally the timer will shift back to the cooling mode after 18-22 minutes. If it does not restart after the 30 minutes your problem is the defrost timer. Rotate the dial SLOWLY a little more and it should go back into the cooling mode. If you followed the above instructions and did not get a defrost the problem is in the heaters or defrost thermostat.
