Problem with Philips Magnavox 20MT133S 20" TV

My digital stream converter box DTX9900 was purchased on 8/7/08

The converter box work just fine when setup in July 2008.  As of June 12, 2009 the box isn't working.  The green on light keeps flashing and I don't have any picture or setup menu.  The box isn't shuting off (Red Light) , the green light just flickers on and off.  I purchased my boxes through the coupon program at Radio Shack.  When I hooked up the other box on the same TV I was able  to rescan and get the Digital Channels as before.  I call the tech support and was told that The company NHENS only warranties the product for 6 months. I then spoke with a supervisor who said that there was an extended warranty that I could have purchased from Radio Shack.  Why should government monies be given for the coupon program if the product doesn't last a year?  What kind of product are they investing in if the manufacturer thinks it won't last more than six months?

My (otherwise great...) DTX9900 converter box died with these same symptoms. (Units green LED flashes continuously and unit is dead)

Upon inspecting the unit I located a blown electrolytic capacitor on it's power supply board. After replacing the blown capacitor the converter has worked fine. A blown capacitor can be identified visually. The canister's top will be expanded out instead of flat. Just compare all of the caps. Look for any that are not flat on top. Blown caps will usually be discolored. The bad cap in my unit was a 330uf / 16v - 105c value cap. I replaced it with a slightly superior brand 330uf / 25v - 105c cap.

    • How I get the box open. I took out all the screws, but I can't get inside.

    • Hello,

After removing the screws, notice the four open slots on the bottom of the case.
Two each on the ends of the case they are right on the ends of the case. The slot
holes are about 7/16" long by about 1/8" wide. Take a small (say 3/16") flat bladed
screw driver and insert it gently in to the slot. Press the tip gently towards the center
of the case to release the locking tab you are pushing against. You should feel that
corner's locking tab release. The tricky part is to prevent the corners you have released
from re-locking while you release the others.

    • Dusted off my 30watt soldering iron and performed the fix. The 330uF capacitor was blown just as you mentioned. Radio Shack didn't stock a 330uF in my area, so I substituted a 470uF / 35v (#272-1030). It works perfectly again. It even remembered my channels. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks Zorwiz I was only able to get the 470 35 105 but works great you have made a old cheap man happy

ZorWiz description and solution worked for me as well.
Easy to visually identify blown capacitor.
Easy to replace. I used 330 uf 25v (50cent item locally).
Thanks for the assistance.

    • ZorWiz identification and solution also worked great for me.

Easy to spot blown cap. Easy to replace. I, too, used 330 uf 25v replacement. OK for weeks now.

ZorWiz's best solution worked for me. Could not find the exact Cap. used a 330 uf 25V 85C. Wish me luck, plan to turn unit off when not using it, used to leave it on all the time.

Hello iambic6676,

Sad to say but these boxes are only meant as a stop gap, but your box should have not failed. Try this: connect your converter box to an amplified antenna and then to the TV, and see if this helps. If it does, the sensitivity on the unit has changed, I have seen this happen because of the quality of components. If the amplified antenna does not work then the unit is totally defective.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,
