Question about Freezers

Open Question

Chest freezer water leaking from lid when I open it

I recently added warm food to our chest freezer..I noticed that when I opened the lid about 1 hr after I put the food in water was dripping from the lid? I unplugged freezer ,defrosted it and turned it back on and waited for 1 hr to check if the water was still leaking and sure enough water is still dripping from the kid when I open it..what could be the problem?

The chest freezer was open wide for 24 hours before I noticed it. Will I have a problem with the unit or will it be fine

as cold air sinks to the lowest point it would have been operating a little longer that if it was closed I would think that it will be fine
example chest freezers in supermarkets only have plastic sliding lids and the ice creams and other frozen foods are still frozen

I have a Magic Chef MCCF7 recently mold has been building up around the seal. the top when closed is very light and you can literally open it up with one finger. what can I do so I don't loose the food...

Use rubber gloves and wipe the seal with a cloth soaked in a diluted bleach solution (20 parts water to 1 part bleach). Let the seal dry. Chest freezers don't lose much of their cool when open so you won't have to worry about losing the food while you are working on it. Close the freezer and let it sit for 30 minutes then repeat the above steps until the mold is gone.

Just bought Belling Chest Freezer Model BCM31 as old one was thick with ice, but new one is frosting up very quickly as well above food line. Is this normal? Setting is right in the middle.

open the lid and using a spirit level check that the unit is flat and that its not "twisted" then using an a4 piece of paper check that the lid sits flat all round with no air leaks (the most common cause of chest freezers frosting up)if you have one, a freezer thermometer is a good investment, as you can set the unit to run at -18C,the optimum temp,,,

Condensation forms around the freezer opening, between the rim and the seal.

The lid is warped or the seal is bad and leaking air.
Determine which it is and replace the seal or the lid.

Kenmore chest freezer does not stay below 30 degrees compressor runs but I don't see a fan to cool the compressor

If your chest freezer is less than 50 years old, it does not have a fan. Cooling coils contact inner walls of freezer compartment, warm coils dissipate heat through outside walls of freezer. If compressor runs, temp is 30+ degrees, gasket is OK, lid not left open, then you have one of two contions: 1. Low capacity compressor 2. Refrigerant leak. Solution to either is to replace freezer. (My opinion: Don't get a Kenmore brand, which generally ties you into poor warranty and slow and poor service.) No matter what brand name is on the freezer, it is most likely manufactured by Electrolux (in St. Cloud, MN) or Haier (from China). Look at the model / serial number plate before purchase to see where it was manufactured. Yes, the USA manufactured ones are better. (and I'm not just saying that because the plant is less than 15 miles from where I am sitting right now)

Running continuously

Hello bxrjer,
Welcome,

You said, you have a FFU20FC6AW2 freezer that I have noticed is running continuously. Explains my $400 electric bill.

How old is the freezer?

The thermostat may be faulty.
But check out this list first.

If the black tubes running back and forth that carry the freon is under the freezer and behind the plastic grill down near the floor you may want to remove the grill cover and gently run a refrigerator brush across the coils. Ive seen them never cleaned and full of lint and dust 2 inches thick.
This is not good for the freezer or any refrigerator too!
They need to be clean so air can run across them or they over heat and get hot.
Room or outside weather is hot. It is normal for the freezer to work harder under these
conditions.

Reasons why Freezer may run too much or too long.

1.Freezer had recently been disconnected for a period of time. Freezer requires 4 hours to cool
down completely.
2.Large amounts of warm or hot food have been stored recently. Warm food will cause the
freezer to run more until the desired temperature is reached.
3.Door is kept open too long or too frequently. Warm air enters the freezer every time the door
is opened. Open the door less often.

4.Freezer door may be slightly open. (Freezer is not level. It rocks on the floor when it is moved slightly. This condition can force the cabinet out of square and misaligned the door.Freezer needs to be leveled if this occurs.
Floor is uneven or weak. Freezer rocks on the floor when it is moved slightly. Level the floor by using metal or wood shims under the freezer or brace floor supporting the freezer.

5.Temperature control is set too cold. Turn the control knob to a warmer setting. Allow several
hours for the temperature to stabilize.
6.Freezer gasket is dirty, worn, cracked, or poorly fitted. Clean or change gasket. Leaks in the
door seal will cause freezer to run longer in order to maintain desired temperature.

Excess frost not keeping food frozen

you have a refrigeration issue. let me guess. is the frost real thick around a small area not the entire lining? if so you have a restriction or leak. cheaper to replace by the way

Outside surfaces of freezer very hot to touch

it should be warm to the touch but not so hot you cant. and also depending on how long the freezer is running and how warm it is where the freezer is will effect how hot the outside is. the reason the outside of the freezer is hot is because thats how the freezer releses its heat from the refrigerant. the longer it runs or the harder it has to work the more heat it has to hive off. so unless the freezer is not cooling there is nothing to worry about.
