Carbs of that era typically had a thermally activated automatic choke. When the car is cold, the first time you pump the gas pedal the butterfly in the throat of the carb should close. My guess is that isn't happening.

Another possibility is old and/or contaminated fuel, gas in a tank loses its octane over time, and some water will tend to accumulate. Trouble is, the tank is never truly drained, the pickup is a little off the bottom, to avoid feeding that crud to the engine. Filling the tank dilutes it enough to eliminate the problem, but a few gallons may not.

WARNING: DO NOT attempt to vacuum or pump gasoline out of a gas tank, UNLESS you have pumping equipment SPECIFICALLY INTENDED TO HANDLE GASOLINE! People that do stupid things with gasoline end up in burn units all the time, use extreme caution when handling gasoline, or you might become one of them.

Check the tang in the float and adjust properly. Make adjustments with the needle valve slowly. Make certain there are not fuel line leaks or air gaps. Do all of this without the filter or top cover.

To start a small two stroke engine the rope needs to pulled rapidly. So from what you are saying I believe that your problem may not be in the ignition system. An engine needs three things to start and run- air, fuel and spark. Make sure that it is getting enough air by checking the filter and make sure if its a foam element that no foam has torn from the element and been sucked into the engine. Clean or replace a dirty element. Check the fuel filter and make sure that fuel can flow freely through it. Even a tiny amount of dirt can clog a filter enough to hinder flow to the carburetor. Replace the filter if it's dirty or over a season old. Clean the carburetor THOROUGHLY! Use a good quality carb cleaning spray and make sure the diaphragm isn't hardened or creased. Replace any part that's questionable. A way to test start the engine is to put a few drops of pure gasoline in the spark plug hole and quickly replace the plug and pull the cord to start it. If it starts for a moment the ignition system is good. Don't do this more than a few times cause a two stroke engine requires oil in the fuel to lubricate the rotating assembly and running straight fuel for more than a few seconds can damage the engine. Do not use starting fluid it damages two stroke engines.

Moped 2 cycle, starts but will not run. Changed plug, tested wire and coil, runs for about 10 seconds and stalls?

Dolls, Playsets & Toy Figures???? Must be some moped!
On to the problem.
Since it runs a bit, I'd assume that the ignition is OK so would look to fuel delivery as the probable problem.
- If there is a fuel filter, I'd clean or change it.
- Good idea to make sure the air filter is clean.
- Flush the carb.
- Fresh gas in the tank?

Even though you drained the fuel it sounds like the carb needs to be cleaned or else the diaphragm in the carb may have a hole in it. Can you pour fuel in the carb and have it run so it is the carb. Hope this helps. In addition, did you gap the new plug sometimes they get closed up in shipping.

Not sure what to say other than its fuel starvation, if not already done replace the fuel filter in the tank, if no better i would suspect a massive air leak, so replace the crank seals, if there is no primary compression in the crankcsae fuel will not pull through the engine, good luck.

I have a 1981 ramcharger 318 4 barrel edelbrock carb. it starts fine, drives well for about 15 min but dies. dies quicker when 4 barrels kick in. about 2 min after dying it will start up fine and do it...


Those rattly noises are detonations,  caused by a very lean mixture. All the other symptoms indicate that the fuel flow to the carb is too low. Since you have replaced the pump and the filter, the only other things left to check are the lines and the tank sump. Or you could install a much larger pump.

get a carb kit new fuel lines.new fuel filter, air filter clean the tank and carb install new filters and fuel lines and you should be good... or you could first try pouring the gas in a clean clear container and see if you have water sitting in the bottom, then you could get a way w changing the gas you might have to let it stall out on you a couple times before you get rid of the water in the lines and carb run it on a littl less than 3/4 choke.

Engines stall shortly after starting


Disassemble and clean the carb, particularly the jets. I suspect the charge light being on is a result of your destroyed battery, which needs to be replaced. Sta-bil over the winter and a smart trickle charger will prevent the problems you are having in the future...

Not so many reasons she won't start. 4-Strokes are Simple!

Here they are:

Motor:
Fuel Tank-> Fuel Line-> Fuel Filter-> Carb-> Intake (Valve)-> Piston-> Exhaust (Valve)-> Muffler

Carb (Old Style):
Fuel Side:
Fuel Bowl-> Float-> Needle Seat-> Fuel Ports (Venturi)
Air Side:
Air Filter-> Carb Air Intake-> Butterflies (2)
(Clean 'em ALL!)

Hardware (Motor):
Rotor (Magnets)-> Magneto (Ignition Coil)-> Spark Plug Wire-> Spark Plug-> Cylinder Head (Spark Plug Ground)

Ignition:
Kill Switches (Seat, Clutch, etc.)-> Spark Plug/Ignition Coil-> Ground
Key Ignition-> Battery->Starter/Generator

If one of those fail.......= Non-Starting 4-Stroke!

Fixes-
Fuel:
You are either getting too much, or too little. Too much = Carb.
Too little = Carb. Therefore, tear down the Carb (COMPLETELY-Careful!) and clean it up.

Electrical:
Grounding out the System (Kill Switches)
Battery-> Ignition-> Starter.
Magneto->Plug Wire->Plug (Check 'em all!)
