Singer 8280 bent needle, now machine wont work

I have a Singer 8280. The needle bent and when I went to replace itI could not raise the fit the replacement needle in at the height the hole is in. I cannot turn the knob to raise it and it will not work with the pedal either. Is something broken inside? Is it worth fixing or should I get another one?

Depends what it would cost for service. Most standard service would cost at least $50-100. You can purchase a replacement machine for ~$100.

SOURCE: I can't raise the bobbin thread. The needle raises before the bobbin thread can 'catch'

readjust the hook to just grab the thread loop as the needle raises it will take a few tries to get the exact setting for the hook (maybe you will see a mark on the hook shaft to show you where the hook's set screw was located before it slipped)

SOURCE: How do I raise and lower the feed dog on my singer

On your Singer, you don't actually raise / lower the feed dog. Instead you attach a "darning plate" (which should have come with the machine) which covers the feed dogs so they do not come in contact with the fabric. The thread is stitched from the top only in singer 8280.

Try a brand new needle. A bent, damaged needle will sometimes not stitch correctly. If that doesn't work, most likely the machine has been knocked out of time. Take it for service.

The thread keeps bunching up near the bobbin and no amount of rethreading and lubricating is helping.

1.upper tension may be to tight--try 3 to 5

have you tried a new needle
2.the needle may be bent or damaged--try rolling the needle on a flat surface to see if it's bent or not
3.Correct needle insertion
Correct needle insertion is mandatory for proper use of sewing machine.
Raise the needle bar to the highest point, then loosen the clamp screw to remove the old needle, place the new needle in the clamp with the flat side to the back of the machine or if using a round needle--the groove in the needle should face away from the shaft.
Push the needle all the way up to the stop or as far as it will go, then tighten the needle clamp screw
4.also check to see if the thread has come off the thread take up lever

My bobbin thread won't pick up. Its a new machine and everything came attached. followed the instructions and no go.

Generally, this is because the needle is inserted wrong or because it's bent. In the first case, the top of the needle (called the shank) has a flat side-this has to be inserted so it faces the back or away from you.
In the second case, when a bent needle stops the top thread from picking up the bobbin thread. Even if you think your needle is fine, change it to see if this solves the problem.

Singer 8280 will not zig zag

If your machine has been sitting and not being used, try oil and taking a hair dryer to your needle shaft. This may free it up so that you can adjust your width and length. Another thing could be that your needle shaft is bent. I hope that the hair dryer does the trick for you.

If you are not able to free this easily, you really should consider taking it to a service technician to look at it in case you do more damage to the needle bar and elsewhere trying to fix it yourself.

clean the lint out with canned air (best thing going) then I hope the tension is still back to where it was.never change this with out going back to the first setting and keeping it noted so you know where the problem is not. try changing the needle it may be bent
