WHY CAN'T I GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP?

This is a very common problem. Occasional insomnia happens to everyone, but when it persists it can be hell. There are several possible causes

- medications: some cause sleeplessness. Check with the doctor.

- backlit screens: these emit blue light, which suppresses melatonin levels in the body. Melatonin is essential for good sleep. Read a paper book for an hour or 2 before bed, not TV.

- body clock out of adjustment: if your natural rhythms are disturbed, say by sleeping in all the time, you will become a night owl. Do to bed and get up at the same times, and seek sunlight in the mornings.

- eating late or drinking caffeine and alcohol: all will tend to keep you awake. Take none after dinnertime.

If you make adjustments and it does not help, ask your doctor for a referral to a sleep disorder specialist.

Mayo clinic website

You should ask her doctor, and her doctor should be clear about ALL the medications and supplements she is taking. Melatonin is a natural hormone that nature uses to put our brains to sleep when it's dark, and we make less of it as we age. It's a "natural" supplement in that way only, because the amount sold is far more per dose than our bodies make naturally when we follow the normal light/dark cycle. It has far fewer side effects and problem of interactions with other drugs, but in rare situations it's not a good idea, anyway, for example bipolar disorder or seizure disorder. Taking extra does not help it work, and getting too much may be one of the reasons for "winter blues", so take note if her mood gets worse instead of more rested. Just double-check with the geriatrician doctor or Nurse Practitioner.

Why should I adapt to the local schedule?

You need to adapt to the local schedule because you're body needs to adjust your melatonin hormone according to the new surroundings. The sunlight will cue your hypothalamus to reduce the production of sleep-inducing melatonin during the day, thereby initiating the process of resetting your internal clock.
