Question about Craftsman 20 Gallon Portable Horizontal Air Compressor with Hose and

1 Answer

Why won't it pump up past 40#?

My air compressor a Craftsman Professional #919.195411. A 2.0 HP 25 GAL. only pumps up to 40#PSI. I have drain the water valve on the bottom, checked the air filter, checked the on /off box, it's full of oil. There does seem to be some air leaking from the top of the compressor around the plate the folter screws into?

It's not an oilless compressor, I said I checked the oil and it was full?

The most common problems are a faulty valve plate or a bad check valve (if so equipped) that goes from the pump to the tank.

Do you use a nail gun with this compressor? At 40psi the nail gun should not operate correctly. Im not sure how old the compressor is but a common problem is blow by on the piston rings. The compressor cant pump to a higher pressure as its leaking back out past the rings. If you have air tools that dont work properly try them on another compressor and see what happens. This problem can drive you nuts . I only found my problem after taking my nail guns for a service and the service bloke said they were ok but he serviced them anyway. When i got home they didnt work .I finally woke up what was wrong. Another clue is if your compressor wont stop running. Not stopping at the set pressure. Hope this helps

If you don't have any air leaks, the cylinder head gasket is probably bad on the pump. Easy fix for less than $10. you can get the parts you need here:
http://www.mastertoolrepair.com/sears-craftsman-919195411-p-48270.html or ebay.com. For around $50 you can get the whole rebuild kit.

SOURCE: Craftsman 5 hp 30 Gal Won't build to more than 50/60 PSi

Most oilless compressors suffer from a short lifespan of the cylinder and piston ring. Unplug the unit and remove the cover to expose the cylinder and rod. Move piston to topmost position and examine the condition of the cylinder. If you see scratches or worn areas close to the top of the cyl. then most likely will need rebuild kit. (Not expensive) If cylinder looks good, remove the head and check the reed valves for debris or broken reed. Reed valve plate is also available as part with gaskets. To extend the life of an oilless compressor try not to use it in dusty or sandy areas as the bottom of the unit is open and tends to **** dirt into cylinder. Good Luck.

SOURCE: Craftsman air compressor 1 HP 12 gal 125 psi

this is probably an "oilless" compressor, it has "piston" with a thin ring of leatherlike material acting as a piston ring, the "cylinder" is an aluminum sleeve - what usually happens is the cylinder gets scratched from dirt or just wear or the leather ring deteriorates, that's why it will go only so far - the only fix for this is to replace the cylinder and the piston

SOURCE: AIR LEAK ON CRAFTSMAN AIR COMPRESSOR, 3HP,25 GAL, HORIZ TANK

The needle valve that you see is the unloader which releases air pressure from the discharge line after set pressure is obtained. If air continues to leak after the compressor shuts off, the check valve installed in the tank is leaking air out of the tank. Follow the air discharge line from the compressor to the tank. There you will find a brass valve which is the check valve. Simple test is to remove the smaller airline (1/4") from the brass valve and check for air leaking. If leaking remove brass valve and check for debris under the white seat. If you cannot clean the valve, replace with generic check valve from www.grainger.com. It will cost less than factory part. Just order the valve considering the fitting sizes that you need. For exact replacement,( www.sears.com parts). If you sears model # begins with WL then your compressor is made by campbell hausfeld and parts may be ordered from www.chpower.com. Good Luck with you repair and email if you have more questions.

SOURCE: need to replace drain valve

The "welded nut" is the pipe fitting into which the drain valve or drain plug is screwed. It's usually brass and the valve or plug can be obtained through Sears or possibly and good harwarde store. Be sure to use pipe sealing compound or teflon tape on the threads when you re-install the valve or plug.

NOTE - THE AIR MUST BE DRAINED FROM THE TANK BEFORE REMOVING THE VALVE OR PLUG. ALSO, POWER SHOULD BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE COMPRESSOR!

Water in the air tank

I don't know about your specific unit, but my compressors have drain valves on the bottom. Mine is like an old radiator drain, but you could have quarter turn valves or screwdriver operated valves, etc. Take a look and post back.

Check for a leak between you compressor head (pump) and your tank. Your pump output may be good but as your tank pressure gets higher the leak will not allow the tank to build up.

1 hp 3gal craftsman compressor will only build up to 20lbs pressure in tank. how much compression should single cyl have on compression stroke?

A piston in any engine should be around 100 psi I would guess. A Chevy 350 used to be around 150 psi. An air compressor that only pumps enough air to reach 20psi is obviously too low on compression. Nailers and the like need 80 or more psi. The intake valves may be shot, the unloader might be stuck or piston rings are worn.

Cold weather will freeze the water the compressor normally makes and this can prevent the switch diaphragm from releasing.... also drain the tank

Pressure is not building up past 25 psi

ONLY TWO THINGS CAUSE THIS, A DEFECTIVE PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE OR A WORN OUT COMPRESSOR, THIS ASSUMES YOU HAVE NO LEAKS.
